Maintain an SKS? Ha! That's the beauty of an old surplus rifle... you shoot it, wipe it down, store it. No maintenance what so ever.

Maintaining a bolt action will be easier, because if you are shooting cheap surplus ammo it will probably be corrosive and you have to clean it right after firing (use windex first). There is no gas system on a bolt action to clean.
