Anne Bredon wrote it in the 50's, and Joan Baez (who Page and Plant were fascinated with at the time) made a successful cover of it in the early 60's.
I think someone might have even done it before Anne.

But I won't get into details you're a Zep Bro :) +1

I know Zep did do a lot of really old Delta Blues type of things from way back.

Blind Willie Johnson - In My Time Of Dying / Jesus Make Up My Dying

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5HaHVKRouo

And Johnson borrowed the lyrics from that song from about a dozen traditional gospel songs. A lot of the lyrics from In My Time of Dying were listed in a book about street performers in 1925.

I guess the families of those street performer guys should sue Johnson's family, who in turn should sue most of the bands in the 60's, who in turn should sue Zeppelin.

Good. Hope they win so we don't have to hear that song anymore.

Do you hear it a lot up there? :). I can't remember the last time I heard it without actually going to the web and finding it.

Yes, all the freaking time. They play it on the radio constantly and even though I do not really listen to the radio, it seems to be playing in the mall or wherever I happen to be.

it seems that 'Stairway' piece is a public domain written in baroque era by harpist O'Carolan

https://musictales.club/article/celtic-baroque-roots-stairway-heaven
LOL, wow, that's IT right there, sounds like both of them used this piece. To be fair, artists have been copying styles/riffs forever. here's the Beach Boy's usage of Chuck Berry's 'Sweet little sixteen", https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35sK-1qaZAA Since this was just sweet little sixteen with surf lyrics, the Beach Boy's were forced to list Berry as composer and he retained all publishing rights. Again with "Fun, fun, fun" they use Berry's 'Johnny B Goode, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qcUnOH_DK4
Here Robin Thicke uses a Marvin Gaye 1977 hit's bass line in "Got to Give It Up" for "Blurred lines", https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=102&v=yyDUC1LUXSU Gaye's family sued and won $7.5 million.
Coldplay was forced to settle with Joe Satriani for theft of "If I Could Fly" for their "Viva La Vida", https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=43&v=dvgZkm1xWPE calling it a "coincidence"

Music repetition happens. I've seen it first hand. 2 completely different bands in different states writing the same riff. One accused the other of ripping it off, and even though they had not heard/seen each other in any form. The band who got blamed for it, wrote it 2 years before the other. I like to blame it on quantum physics. Note I am not saying stealing/borrowing ideas don't happen. It happens way more than anyone would like to admit.

And yet...you posted in it instead of going to a different one. Never understood the 'necro' mentality and the people who make a point to tell everyone.

No, me neither. If someone want's to add something to a 3-4yr old thread, so be it. Usually the thread get locked as a necro, makes sense when discussing CPU's or SSD's, ect. since in 3-4yrs those price/performance issues are pretty much irrelevant.
