LED versus LCD technology? (Monitors?)

I read about LED monitors a few years ago. Supposedly they do not require a clean room to manufacture, has lower power requirements than a LCD and are between LCD (thicker than) and Plasma (thinner than) monitors. Display resolutions are comparable.

Well it's been 3 years and I can't find any reference to these anymore.

Anyone heard of any company producing prototypes?
