I tried the LED lights last year on the Christmas tree. The light they gave off actually bothered my eyes. It's not soft. I think the LEDs are good for outside and not inside in your line of vision.

Mosh is right:

If you get LEDs, make sure you get the ones with full wave rectification. Otherwise, they blink at 60Hz which is noticeable.

Don't know about that, I know how to tell electronically if I take the thing apart, but typically as a "consumer" how should I tell my wife to shop?

The other effect thats unnerving is to move your head or eyes quickly past the lights drawing them through your field of vision when they are on. You realize they aren't solidly on. SOme cars do this and its terribly distracting.

The color changes on LED's too. The purples and blues are noticeably different this year while the yellow is even more piercing.

They have LEDs you can toss into C7 slot. I tried some but as others said color and glow is just not the same. Old school for me too.

Old school C7's are still my lights of choice.

That's what we had growing up, but I always used small lights myself. I've come around to the big lights again, and may use them next time I put up a tree. I especially like the really old school painted bulbs, but they get hot as hell, and are kind of dangerous.

About 150-160. Might some melt wax on a ornament that has wax not much else. Trees and paper need over 500 to ignite.

I think they were hotter than that. They'd easily blister skin. We used to put heat shields behind the bulbs to protect the tree.
