LED Monitors

I didn't put this question in the LCD thread, because I'm not entirely sure how similar the two monitors are to each other.

Basically, my question revolves around this amazon link

All these LED monitors with the exception of the Apple are around 3-400 dollars, even the 24". Are the LEDs inferior to LCDs or something?

A new ASUS 27" LED monitor is 346 bucks!

Is the new DELL 2011 30" an LED monitor? I read the anandtech review and I couldn't figure that out.

Are LED Monitors the future?

all current LED monitors are LCDs with an LED backlight array rather than cold cathode (fluorescent) backlight.

the terms "LED monitor" and "LED TV" are ridiculously misleading. most people hear one of those and think the dots themselves are LEDs, when they're not.

They are but there's different types, this page explains the differences: LED TVs

(currently all PC specific LED monitors are edge-lit, no local dimming)

it's a TN panel. that's the least expensive current panel type. TN also has the advantage of low latency. the disadvantage is poor off-center viewing angles, color reproduction, and contrast. basically, good for games, not so good for TV.

that asus in particular is low resolution for a 27" screen. only 1920x1080 (iow, Full HD).

Ah yes, I forgot about that. There's TN, IPS, and a third.

From what I recall, IPS is generally the best, but can have the highest latency, yes?


And, is the Dell 3011WFP an "LED" monitor?

i finally tested out my U2211H (IPS) on a high framerate twitch game, bit.trip beat, for the GLaDoS thing ... lol, i don't entirely recommend it for gaming (or at least that type). maybe other IPS panels are slightly faster, but i don't suggest at least the U2211H if you have SFIII/SSFIV/other fighter-sharp reflexes

however, if i had to give up all LCDs i own, i'd keep it and it alone. screw TN/*VA color :S

another thing to keep in mind W(hite)LED has worse color quality, at least at the moment. RGBLED i think is might be at least equal to CFL, if not better, but due to how few there are, i haven't seen any reviews

Funny you say that I have a fast TN panel (PX2370) and a slower PVA (2333T) and lately ive been gaming on the PVA.. It's just a nicer monitor to look at with its deep black levels and high contrast ratio. I can handle a little motion blur, The input lag is very low so that's not an issue. It' just hard to ignore the PVA's 0.04 cd/m2 black levels, It makes a big difference.
