LED flashlights are actually useful now

about five years ago, I remember buying an led keychain flashlight that wasn't. The light was bright red but it didn't really do jack for illumination and the fact that it was red light didn't help at all.

Fast forward to today, I bought a keychain flashlight at Fry's for 8 dollars. It's actually usable and the light is white. It's about as bright as an 2 AA/AAA maglight but much much smaller.

When they make an LED flashlight using 6 D cells like my giant maglight, I'll have to get one.

i reckon somethings gonna come out of japan soon.
something the size of an AA battery but brighter than a small maglight.

if one of those LED torches were focused properly, like a maglight is, they could do some damage :D

I've seen a few LED flashlights that use 2 AA batteries. They are great and the batteries last almost forever.

I saw a couple of promising ones, one of them used 2 AAAs and had 5LEDs or something. Room was too light to test it in though.

Surefire has a LED adapter that lets them run for 4 hours, instead of 20 minutes.

I have not tried it but it is supposedly pretty bright, although not as bright as the incandescent.

I do have replacement bulb for a 3D mag and it is bright enough and the batteries should last about 20 days of continuos runtime. Also have a replacement kit for a mini-mag that is throws a good bright beam and will run for 20 or more hours.

The led itself should last for thousands of hours and they dont have a filament to break liek when you drop a flashlight with a hot bulb.

Yeah the Surefire adapters are about $50. They don't have them for my 9AN yet :(

They do have them for my Executive though.

Get the Brinkman light (the cylindrical one) at your local walmart for fifteen bucks--I LOVE mine--I've had it for two years, and found it to be quite durable (even survived a two-story drop down my apartment's wood & concrete stairs--I use it daily and have replaced the batteries twice since I've had it--I don't use it as such, but if you were to put some lithium batteries in it and throw it in the glovebox, you'd have a top notch emergency flashlight.

How bright is the flashlight? We don't need 1million candle power but something decent would be nice. It's just for a dark backyard whenever the dogs go outside.

I haven't done a side by side compare, but I'd be willing to say that the Brinkman is brighter than a mini-mag light--at the very least--I've mostly used mine indoors.
