When I heard this, the first thing that came to mind was that he wanted to disassociate himself from Jordan.
When Kobe receives comments about comparisons to Jordan, he shows respect for him but has always maintained that he plays his game and doesn't want to be cast in Jordan's shadow.
This is what LeBron wants, and wearing 23 is preventing him from doing that. Wearing 23 may be paying tribute to Jordan, but that's more appropriate for non-superstars. LeBron knows he has to have a number of his own, so that one day people will be buying his number, and not Jordan's.
Just another reason why I dislike LeBron. Fantastic athlete, superb b-ball player, but as a person he's so marveled with personal stature and "becoming a global icon". Kobe has a lot of negative qualities as well, but his greedy stays on the basketball court. He wants titles and nothing else, no world domination bullshit.
