Better to be a contender for several years than to be a contender for just one year.

It's better to have one ring and never be a contender again than be a condender every year until you retire without winning a ring. I hope Kobe makes it to very last game of the finals every year until he retires only to lose. Shaq has a ring, so he would probably argue with your statement. Being a conderder doesn't mean shit if you don't win the championship. Lakers are unable to win when it matters, and in the end that's all that matters.

I think you're missing my point a little bit. Kobe (allegedly) said something like, "either Shaq goes, or I go" to Lakers brass. Kobe then behaved so poorly on the court that HoF coach Phil Jackson resigned rather than deal with it. Fast forward a couple of years, Lakers trying to rebuild around Kobe, Kobe says "trade me".

That is very much open to debate.

As a fan, I'd rather have my team contending for a decade, than winning once and having the other 9 years be mediocre.

Shaq and Kobe had their run and it was time to move on because the rift was unpatchable. But you can't fault Kobe for the Lakers not getting in another all-star quality player after that, until half-way into last year. I can't think of a single team that has been finals-worthy with only one allstar (altho I imagine there have been some.)

As for Kobe wanting to be traded...things were cleared up and Kupchak finally had the fire under his @ss to get in a solid partner for Kobe (/edit: or atleast was fortunate enough to have West do his job for him.... and they immediately made the finals, even w/o bynam )
