Let's say your day ends at 5 and you want to leave at 4

do I tell my boss or try to slip out unnoticed and deal with the repercussions on Monday (if any)?

My boss doesn't care what time I'm at my desk as long as I get my job done.

The time off is better when you don't tell him!

Yeah, don't want any nasty calls/emails asking where I am. Though, he probably wouldn't care too much anyways unless we were on a deadline or something.

Same here, but I still tell him so he knows I am not around.
It is FREE to tell him!

Since I close the stockroom, I'd have to... but nobody's here to tell.

I left at 2, and didn't say anything. As long as I get my work done it doesn't really matter. Plus he's on travel today.

At my job there is no leaving work early! I think they'd be upset if I just walked out of the classroom and left my kindergarteners to fend for themselves! :)

If I could leave early, I would tell my boss. I don't think I could just leave without letting someone know.

I haven't even shown up to work yet. Going to leave in about 15 minutes and hit the gym in the building, stop by my cube to pick up my mail and come back home.

Probably leaving at 3 today... Don't plan on telling anyone, everyone has my number that needs it.

As soon as the boss is gone, most people in my dept. disappear.

We get to make our own schedules, and are free to use our PTO at our discretion. I love this job.

When I need/want to leave early, I just pop my head in his office and say, "Hey boss I'm heading out early, I'll either make up the time or count it as PTO".

Depends on what kind of job and boss you have. I've never had a job where I would feel comfortable just leaving without telling anyone. I've never had an engagement sudden and pressing enough to need to leave early without having acquired permission days beforehand for that matter. Just "wanting to leave" never felt like a good enough excuse to me.

I can't really imagine my boss caring.

I'd just be like "hey james, care if I leave an hour early today? I have to go take care of (X) after work, I can come in early on Monday or something." (and then not actually come in early because my boss is 3000 miles away and doesn't get in until noon my time)

    niiiiiiiice

im still a part timer while im in school, and have a do-nothing job. i leave a little early regularly and the boss doesnt care as long as the few minor things are done that she expects.

also i only see her once every few weeks, shes really easy to get along with.

I'd never be able to do that unless I specifically ask for the hour off.

Yep. We are a bit stricter here about working your 40 hours (government) but I take it a bit loosely. I may be in the office ~40/week but I also spend at least 10 hours per week outside of work on professional development.
