Leaving Turn signals on!

This really bothers me, was wondering if it really irks anyone else or if anyone knows the legal liability in the following event from a few minutes ago:

Simple 'T' intersection. I'm at the stop sign; to the right is a blvd with a limit of 50km/hr, and to the left is a previously windy street with a 40km/hr limit. Very wide intersection as it moves into the blvd right after. I'm about to turn left Large SUV traveling at about 60 is coming from the 40zone and slows down a touch (not abnormal as there are often speed traps at the intersection) with indicator on. I have been waiting for perhaps 30 seconds and interpret the slowing down and signalling as "I am going to turn" so I proceed forward a few feet.

SUV keeps coming and slams on the brake (which accomplished nothing more than shredding the tires as they were not that close to me). Passenger is your standard trophy GF and she bitches like they do. Driver has a goofy look on his face, turns off the signal says something to the GF and drives on very embarrassed looking.

So.. If we had collided who would be at fault for insurance? I feel that I likely would be as to the best of my knowledge there is no legal obligation to signal properly. But man it pisses me off even still... I suppose the speeding would make liability more complicated as well.. No harm no foul as they say.. but proper signalling is not that difficult to not fuck up!

Can't trust anyone these days.. which I suppose I already knew..

You would have been at fault. Turn signal is proof of nothing, and it;s up to you to make sure you can make a turn safely.

you are liable - not ensuring that you have a clear turn.

Yeah I figured... people are still useless...

Though come on guys.. only two car joke puns... terrible.

I mean it could...

Pop my tires

Break my glass

Deploy my airbag

Scratch my paint

so on and so forth...

got behind an old guy who let his left turn signal on for probably close to 10 miles.

I suppose the clicking is hard to hear in some cars.. or if you are 99..

Needless to say I should be more careful and I'm glad I didn't get fucked up as liability and more expensive insurance would be of lesser worry than an escalade in my drivers door...

I always leave my left turn signal on while in the left lane for five miles, then make swift lane changes to the right in front of cars smaller than mine.

I usually turn the opposite one on at a 3 way stop and then go through the intersection. Really confuses the car behind you.

Someone who leaves a turn signal on does so by accident. Someone who doesn't use turn signals is a horrible, horrible person who can burn in hell.

Anybody with a valid driver license would know not to turn in front of a car with his blinkers on.

Where did you get your OP, a box of cracker jack

The issue mostly, I think, is people that turn the stick all the way for just changing lanes. If the turn isn't sharp enough the stick doesn't reset. When changing lanes you just have to depress the stick partially and then release it.

This.

But don't worry about folks who leave the signals on. Eventually the fluid will dry out and they'll turn themselves off.

In NZ you would be at fault for failing to give way.

I used to accidentally leave my indicators on all the time on my motorcycle when I was learning. Made me LOL when people got angry.

I usually drive in front of them leaving my turn signal on and flashing them intermittantly. They usually get the message by then. Usually.

Depends. A cop can always assign partial blame to anyone not using reasonable judgment. Unless you can make it FOR SURE safely, never try. It just isn't worth it.
Never trust another driver's signals or lack of them.
I saw a t-bone accident yesterday that someone tried to make it through too late and got nailed.

The OP obviously hasn't been driving very long.

Oh I've been driving plenty long 😛

I realise I would have been at fault... Just wanted to make sure.. It is not like I came close to hitting the fellow as I only drifted forward a few feet before realizing that he wasn't turning after all.. not too hard to detect. His slamming of the breaks and GF yellage was a pretty normal over reaction to assuming I was not going to stop..

I love the Internet 😀 No my drivers licence did not come from a box of cracker jacks.. the OP might have though. I was not close to hitting the dude.. my moving forward barely took me to the curb. I found it curious who would have been at fault as the other driver seemed rather embarrassed at the over reaction and having left the blinker on and looked as if he felt he was in the wrong. Additionally.. silly usage of indicators is just annoying.. though usually that means not using them at all.

I figure if the worst mistake I ever make while driving is drifting into the cross walk when a car looks to be turning I'm doing pretty well... Though I would doubt that will be the case.

It's slightly more excusable on a motorcycle, as it doesn't shut off automatically after a turn, nor does it make that constant clicking noise. So yeah, it can take a little while to develop the over-learned habit of turning the blinker off.

With automobiles, it's definitely annoying to see the signal left on, although it's infinitely more annoying for it not to be used in the first place. Or when the person still has their left signal going, but ends up switching lanes or making a turn to the right.

I love when I'm waiting to make a right onto a road and watch a car from my left drive towards me and turn completely without signaling. I am more willing to drive out in front of someone if I actually see the signal come on, but I still make sure they're either far enough away they can slam on their breaks, or I can tell they're slowing down sufficiently.
