I'm starting to think this thread has been hijacked.

I am living in Japan right now and specifically in Tokyo. Its a great place and i recommend that you come here on your tirp to japan at least once.

On the Plane thing....check out www.seatguru.com They have everything about every plane that you would care to know about.

If you come to Tokyo there are some nice temples in Asakusa which are fun to see...along with a lot of little shops all overthe place. Good to find that Japanease stuff that people like to get as presents...

Imperial Palace..you cant go in butyou can see some cool stuff

Akihabara is Electronic Town..All the electronics you want...along with girls in maid outfits and a hell of a lot of porn.

If you doing a just a leasure day you could go to Yoyogi park. Its apretty large sized park which is reallly nice. Right next to it is omantesando(sp?). This is a large shopping street..a lot of expesnive places but a great kid store called kiddy land and Oriental Bazaar..THE one stop place to buy gifts for anyone that has anything to d about japan. Seriously it is Gajin central.

Shibuya is a must...Its very easy to get to and you will see some cool people.

Ginza is another VERY popular place to shop

Yokohama...not really Tokyo but a nice place to check out..very diffrent feel and a kick ass china town.

If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

I really wish we had more time, most of that sounds really interesting. The major catch is that I think we are stuck on base for basically the whole trip. We may only get 1 day to get over to Tokyo.

Even while on base we cant even leave the house unless escorted by Miilitary personnel. :(

Nah, not me.

My brother-in-law is getting his O-5 promotion and we are going out for the festivities and the change of command ceremony. Its supposed to be a pretty big deal.

It would be sweet if he was stationed in Hawaii or something :)

Well, sadly, I can report that you can no longer find beer in vending machines on the street in Japan. Needless to say, I was sorely disappointed myself when I was there in October. That said, you can get beer practically everywhere anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

As far as only speaking English, if you're in or around Tokyo, you should be fine. Signs in the subway stations and the like are pretty well marked in English the majority of the time, and it seems like a majority of the people understand enough English that you should be able to manage.

I dont know wha tyou are talking about but there a lot of places you can buy beer from vending machines. I agree there are less then say 12 years ago but there are still plenty around. The thing they dont do at all anymore is sell mini kegs in the machines..now thats cool.

The englihs thing is true...If you come to Tokyo to make yourself learn japanese faster you will be very dissapointed cause guess what..you really dont need it. Yeah you cant really talk to most japeanse people but you can get around the city just fine, and function pretty close to normal just by using common sense.
