Leaving computer unattended?

Yea, i leave automatic updates off, id rather see what is being put on my computer - personal preference. The only thing that will be updating while im away will be my anti-virus - NOD32. That updates by itself in the background and a balloon pops up by the clock in the system tray to tell u when its done. Would it be better to leave the sides of the case off?? I have the icute case 0408SL-BS - it has one fan on one side - and just have that pointing sumwhere towards the cpu?? Thanks
