Its gonna be interesting if you're white, meeting Chinese parents that are still in China. Has your gf prepped you on all the customary things you're suppose to do?

Wow, you're probably never going to want to ride in planes ever again after spending 10+ hours in one on your first flight ever.

you have a better chance of:

A. Getting arrested for espionage
B. Getting arrested because your not chinese
C. Getting kidnapped and sold into slave labor

than you do of making it back in one piece.

what are my chances of having all the chinese ladies wanting my wong?
if you're white, they'll call you the "white ghost"... so you take that for everything it's worth.

whats a white ghost

Cracker in Chinese.
are you chinese, Baked ?

"white ghost" is the literal translation for what they call white people. Well it is in cantonese, not sure about mandarin.

Must be exciting to have the opportunity to travel afar and experience something like this. Oh how I long for a trip to HK myself!

Enjoy your trip. Don't forget to take pics and show us when you're back :)

You ever been to china?

They go out of their way to make westerners feel at home.

One thing about meeting the girl's family: careful what you say. If they are saying things like "I'm sorry our food sucks" they really mean "this is the best meal ever and you better love it" so compliment them every time they say bad things about themselves and never add salt-sauce to food unless you see someone else do it first.

if you ever use a public bathroom carry your own toilet paper . . they don't have the stuff for free.

actually chinese don't eat cats...they taste rather bad & the meat has terrible texture.

you might find some in canton that eat cats but only because cantonese eat anything :D

but seriously most traditional chinese dislike cats...they might be kept only to kill mice.

Edit: on the other hand, dogs, birds, turtles, sharks, or most anything else you can think of are quite welcome!

I told you guys, it's "yang gwai zi". I dont understand why there are so many canto references when the guy is going to Beijing, why not bring on the Phillipino too?

****UPDATE*****
i'm back, and i lived!!! it was a great trip. the flight process took 23 hours. counting lay overs and everything. it was the first time i had ever flown. so i guess u could say it was baptisim by fire, as far as riding in a plane goes. her family was great to me. they bought me suit pants, two shirts, two ties, shoes, and paid for everything.

as far as china goes the main thing that sticks out is the driving. anyone who drives a car in beijing is automaticly a better driver than anyone in america. i am 100% convinced of this. cars zig and zag all over the road. they come over on you, barely missing your car by an inch. while all this is happened 100s of people are crossing the street and hundreds of bike riders are also on the street, its chaos. there are only stop lights on a few roads, there are none on the side roads, no stop signs, so you can imagine the maddness at a four way intersection. if cars didnt have horns driving wouldnt be possible at all there. its an essential tool. you must use your horn 30 times every 20 min trip.

public rest rooms, there are no tolits to sit on, you do your buisness on something made into the floor.

mickey d/kfc the drink sizes are verryyyyyy small in china. their large is our small and the size that comes with a meal is about 2 drinks for me. but its cheap. a meal is 2.50$ and my girl said that was expensive. dvds are like 5$ new i got star wars ep 3 black market dvd for 75 cents.

beggers on the street, these guys are scary, some of them dont have legs, and dont wear shirts to show off their burnt body. me being a white guy, they came right after me looking for money, id dint look them in the eye. just walked past.

the great wall and forbidden city are great. i use to think of calling it the forbidden city as a kind of symbolic image, but it really is a city. its gigantic. it would take a couple of days to see everything in there. its massive. the great wall was also pretty cool,. and a pretty steep climb in some places.

well, thats what i can thinkl of at the moment, anyone got questions.

Hi HOWITIS! Thanks for the detailed description of your trip! I constantly find myself wondering what things are like over in China. They say that industry is booming over there with factories and office buildings popping up all over the place. I'd love to get a chance to go there and see the country for myslef.

I'd like to see more pics of China, especially how things are different than here. I've only been to the more modern HK. BTW, I was pretty surprised at HK drivers... I can only imagine China... it must be worst than Manhattan.
