The owner of the chinese restaurant I delivered for as a teen would blacklist bad tippers and the only way they could get their service restored was to come to the restaurant and properly tip his driver.

He'd also post their name on a list in public view, one part was bad checks and one was bad tippers.

"You got me blacklisted at Hop Sing's?!"

Also tips are more or less considered mandatory in the US unless posted otherwise. It's the same as if the owner decided not to pay a worker because they didn't do a good job.

.

Something is either mandatory or it is not. It is never more or less mandatory. Just like no one is more or less pregnant.

And the analogy is blatantly incorrect. It is terrible actually

In reality, 15% is considered proper to just have someone serve you in any capacity.

Now if they insulted you or totally neglected your table (assuming the reason was not because you picked a place that requires a server to cover 20+ tables) than tips can be adjusted accordingly.

Also tips are more or less considered mandatory in the US unless posted otherwise. It's the same as if the owner decided not to pay a worker because they didn't do a good job.

The answer is leave a tip, speak to the manager about it and /or elect not to return to the establishment.

Sadly, many that do this; ALWAYS have to do it because they are not happy with service anywhere.

What? When did the definition change?

Full Definition of GRATUITY

: something given voluntarily or beyond obligation usually for some service; especially : tip

If you give me crap service I'll give you 0. Or better yet $0.01 just to show a point.

In most fancier restaurants I've been to, the tip is included and stated so on the receipt. But not every place has this feature in place. Overseas it's always included, at least in Europe.

Not in the US I've seen and I've been to some very nice places around LA and OC. I've seen it for parties of 7+ and that's always stated. Europe makes it easier, everything is included in the price. You don't tip extra at all. Also makes splitting the bill much easier with people.

Well manners-wise they are mandatory.

Legally no.

A tip for table service is ALWAYS EXPECTED. That was the norm until recently when people are hashing out the meaning of GRATUITY.

15% is the baseline for basic service. Not excellent service, not at your beck and call service, just shuffling the food and drinks to your table so you can stuff your pie hole.

Posting in an alkemyst + tipping thread. This should get good (again).

McCoy has every right to give them what he thinks they deserved. The restaurant is employing a negative publicity is better than no publicity tactic to get in the national media and it worked, but there are rapid Eagles fans in that city who probably just put them on their "do not eat" list for this whining. I won't be going there ever and neither will my other Philly friends.

I don't see how it's not simple? Want a tip, give good service, don't want a tip, give shitty service. They should be happy they are getting anything at all. If your pay is based on your customer service, something that's already in their basic job description, then you better be giving the best customer service you can.

It's wrong to post the receipt online, waiters and such should be paid minimum wage at least and tipping should be changed to lower percentages.

Aren't all waiters still on the federal minimum wage? I know California waiters still get state minimum wage at least.

I'm gonna go to that PYT place next week. My buddies and I usually eat at places in the city once a week and a lot of them have the standard 10-15 dollar burger.

But I've noticed that when we were about 10 of us, gratuity is usually included. We usually tip 20% if the service is good.

Around dc I've heard it's $2.5/hr, while minimum wage is $7.5.

McDonalds workers on the other hand demanding $15/hr+ LOL! I love people.

How do you guys tip for drinks? I've heard it's $1/drink

People that eat out/order out already complain they are getting ripped off on food prices.

That's the problem.

I have known a couple douchebags that give $3-5 no matter what they order as a meal.

$1 per drink is fine, bottle service is a bit different if they are serving you other things in the VIP area like appetizers and the like.

I tip $1 a time (many just let them keep the change) and I never wait for my drinks no matter how packed the place is.

This is the bad side of social media and internet, companies abuse it like this.

Reminds me of the hotels that charge your credit card $500 for every bad review they find anywhere online during a venue that you organized there such as a wedding.

This type of shit needs to be illegal.
