Well I lived in Rome and there was no tipping. Hell I was a regular at a restaurant I tried tipping a few times (Just because they gave us free food and discounts all the time) and the owner gave me some money before I went back to the US.

ok?

It takes an absolute shitload for me to tip something as low as 20 cents. For me it's more along the lines of 10% instead of my usual 18-22%

I'll give McCoy the benefit of the doubt and say he isn't a cheap ass. Any restraunt stupid enough to do something like this is stupid enough to employ people stupid enough to dick over good paying customers like myself that tip well.

There are your normal customers. They tip 8-15% because that's what they normally do. They see the tip line and just enter default amounts no matter what. Then there are people like myself that average ~18% minimum. But if you fuck up, you wrote yourself a $0.00 check. I hold no sympathy if you manage that, because holy crap that takes a lot.

EDIT: What I am starting to hate is seeing tip lines for fast food joints (Chipotle, Burrito places, walk-in restaurants, etc...). If someone isn't waiting on me hand and foot, fuck you. If I'm standing in a line grabbing my food, grabbing my drink, you did me no service. You did your job, I did mine. Where is the extra payment in that?

This mentality is hilarious, someone that brings you your food to your table deserves a tip but someone that hands you your food doesn't?

Someone that brings your food is also suppose to come and check on you, see if you need anything else, bring you those extra things. Someone that hands you your food like at chipotle and McDonalds is not going to be doing anything extra.

In college I used to work at subway and I never got tipped for handing someone the sandwich. Part of my pay was to make the sandwiches and take care of the work area. If customers sat down after getting their food no one from behind the counter went to ask them if they needed anything else.

I also lived in Europe and you tipped for taxi, hotel concierge that brings your luggage, and other services that required a little extra work. Most restaurants had the tip included in the price of food or otherwise it would be stated on the menu.

There were times where the waiter would not accept the tip and tell us it's not required.

People and their sense of entitlement. Earn your fk'ing tip fool.

I'm the same way, if you give me good service I'm going to hook it up, I've waited tables before. Every one should do it once in their lives.

I went to a bar a few months ago. Had an awesome time, but the cracked out server ruined it. Outside smoking every other second, flirting with old men outside on the porch. Fucked up our tickets(we made it pretty simple, 3 couple, 3 tickets) and took forever to tab us out.

I left her a tip reflecting the service and a signature to let her know she was bad. Well I took a picture of it just in case she changed the tip. She did, she made the total $74. I called the owner told her we had a great time but she has some greasy servers.

Damn did you call the place back and complain? They shouldn't be allowed to change the tip.

I have known a couple douchebags that give $3-5 no matter what they order as a meal.

I usually get good service, and tip about 20%.

But when you think about it, why does the server deserve a bigger tip on a $30 steak, than a $10 burger (at the same restaurant). Was it more effort to carry the plate to my table, or ask if I want a re-fill with the steak? No, it isn't. There should be a better standard than using percentages. Same amount of service, same amount for a tip.

The biggest thing you didn't emphasize to the dumbass.

At Subway, you got your state/federal(7.25) minimum wage.

At a sit-down, a waiter DOES NOT get state/federal(7.25) minimum wage. HENCE tips make up the other half of their paycheck.

Yea I forgot about that. It's similar with bus boys. They basically have to live off of tips.

In many states they do make minimum wage, also if your tips don't cover minimum wage then the employer has to cover it so no matter what they earn minimum wage.

Separate checks is something kids do.

Seems you had a good eye on that cracked out server the whole time though, that's when you end you own misery like a man would and talk to the manager.

A server that pulls their manager aside to get 'minimum wage' will probably not have any more hours given to them.

That would be completely, (and totally) false. The only state I know of that does this is California. You are wrong.

Maybe there are 1-2 others that I don't know of. But "many"? Yeah, you have no clue what you are saying.

QFT, which is why 15% is expected, not technically optional. If one has truly crappy service they need to speak to the manager.

People are cowards though.

...I split my checks all the time. I go out with people that are in their 40's. I'm 26, my wife is 30.

Split checks is avoiding that fun game of asking your friends to pay you back for the next 3 months.

There are 7 states that require tipped staff make the same as non-tipped staff.

Good article and it shows not all wait staff are rolling in dough. Some that work mom and pop places may only get 10 tables in a day. $30 in tips on average plus about $20-24 in wages doesn't go far.

We just split the check evenly and know if you are eating together to bring some cash.

You have no clue, it's federal law, which means ALL states are required to pay at least minimum wage if the tips are not equal to minimum wage.

Wrong again:

This part of your link cracked me up:

The Economic Policy Institute, a left-leaning think tank, found in 2011 that tipped workers are more than twice as likely as other workers to fall under the federal poverty line.

Of course they do, because they don't report all of their tips.

So not leaving a tip is a coward, but complaining to the manager, and then giving the poor preforming server 15% anyways isn't?

What a bizarre world you live in.

The problem you don't understand is it's the same as not paying someone.

15% is expected for service in america. That is just to have food shuffled back and forth. It's not for anything extraordinary.

The problem is too many go to places with cheap food and understaffed tables and get what they pay for, but then decide since the server wasn't at their beck and call that that saves them more money because 'no tip'.

If your server is off the wall, get the manager and discuss it. That's what you do.

Leaving a shitty tip and running away doesn't give any feedback to the restaurant.

Sadly, these types keep going back over and over again.

No shit, sherlock. I know that the amount has to be equal to or greater than minimum wage. The point simply being, working at fast food you do not have to work any harder to get to your already set wage.

I never carry cash.

Cash is asking to:
1) Get robbed
2) Get pick-pocketed
3) Not get any benefit (No cash-back)
4) Not gain any credit (No credit = have fun when you need a car or house loan later in life)

I can go on with the disadvantages, can think of little to no advantages.... (And for every place that takes cash only, I can name many that take credit card only).
