My laptop is a turd and it overheats and shuts down if I don't use a powerful notebook stand and, even then, it still heats up like an $#% hole.

Can't even watch a video in vlc media player without loosing anywhere form seconds of footage to minutes (during which only the sound plays and the image freezes/tears)

I want something that puts the least amount of load on the cpu - anything is fine, as long as it's a lot more cpu- friendly than vlc.

Acer aspire 5715z, pentium dual core T...something.

If you're having this much trouble playing a video on a Pentium DC then you need to re-install Windows badly.

Windows Media Player Classic is what I use

@Joseph F... that's not neccessarily true. My laptop's Core 2 Duo @ 2 Ghz can't play back high bitrate 1080p smoothly without GPU acceleration (and it can't do Youtube 1080p smoothly because my GPU isn't supported for acceleration... ergh!)

I concur with trying MPC-HC. Don't expect miracles though 'cause a quick search reveals the GPU is only capable of MPEG-2 acceleration. Confirm with Bluesky DXVA Checker.

On a side note, even Intel parts which are capable of AVC and VC-1 acceleration may not do so under under XP.
