I'm applying for a lease, and they ask for the checking account #. Is that normal practice? I've never had to give that info for any of the four apartments I've rented.

Maybe the realtor is an identity thief. I haven't seen him or the apartment yet.

Usually they want to see bank account statements or proof of employment.

I dont know about that one man........sounds fishy.

If they wanted proof you were employed, you could provide a paystub. I'd say no go.

Agreed, don't give them the account number. Find out what they want to verify (average balance perhaps) and provide that yourself. If they won't cooperate, you don't want to live there.

You realize that your checking account number is printed on your checks, right? It's not exactly private information.

im guessing you are not renting from a professional management company. ive never seen an application ask for that. kick the realtor in the ballsack and tell him to find another place for you to live.

Checks don't have your SSN but a lease application does

If you write a check for your rent, they get it anyway.

It's been a line item for all apps I've had

That said, I've never filled that line out.

Well, I'm not writing a check for rent. I'm applying for a lease by sending a form to a guy I haven't met yet.

Yes but at that point, you have a contract/business relationship with them.

Some landlords just want to know you actually have a bank account. Others just ignore the line, but left it in the template they used. I've seen it on applications before, but always left it blank.

I agree with this one. When I used to live in apts, I saw this a couple of times. Only one time did it become an issue. I just went to a different complex. I told them my SS and credit history was enough, they didn't agree, so I left. I think both sides were ok with this.

They don't need that to rent you an appartment so i would not provide it. I can understand them asking you for social security number to run your credit but they got no need for bank account #.

I rented an apartment that asked for this on the application once. I just didn't answer it and still got the apartment.

eh, I've filled it out before, and one time I didnt...didnt seem to matter either way.
If you are not comfortable filling it out, leave it blank.
