Only bad thing about Spanish or other foreign languages in high school was that all they teach you is about culture. If I wanted to learn Spanish History, I'd take a Spanish History class. I want to learn how to speak and write Spanish. I don't care how Mexicans date.

What's wrong with learning another language? If you think Spanish is useless, learn a different language. As for colleges requiring foreign languages as part of a general ed. requirement, it's part of their attempt to create well-rounded people.

In the end, it sounds like you need a visit from the waaambulance.

Learn it because there are MANY intellectual benefits to learning a second language, aside from he language itself, and since you have to pick a language, why not pick one that you may well encounter in everyday life. Maybe next time you're at the local mexican restaurant you won't sound like such an idiot because you pronounce fajitas like they do in napoleon dynamite.

If you lived where there are a lot of Mexican immigrants you would be more than willing to learn this language. Besides, traveling in South America is 100 times easier if you speak Spanish.

How about the fact that we share the continent with Spanish speaking countries, except for Canada, Brazil, Guyana, and Suriname? You know English is required in plenty of other countries right?

Why learn this language? Because of the influx of Hispanics? That's no reason to learn their linguistics. The only reason I continue to torment myself with Spanish is because of college requirements. Basically, the Board of Education (I do not know if this is Federal or State) requires all colleges to follow some General Education requirement for foreign languages.

WTF?

Why aren't there requirements that supersede a useless foreign language? I guess 'that's how it is, shutup and follow' explains this nuisance.

My goodness. Backwater language? English requirements that are non-existent?

No one is forcing you to take Spanish. I'm willing to bet your school also offers French, another popular High School foreign language to learn, possibly Latin, and possibly Chinese (as the High Schools in my area have been offering recently). Learning another language is to broaden your horizon. You might as well say, why learn advanced mathematics unless you're going into the science field. Why have P.E. if you're not going to be an athelete. You should be thankful that you're even afforded the opportunity to learn.

Regarding immigrants learning English. Many do. Your comparison of immigrants to students in schools is off base. Immigrants come here to make a new life. They slowly learn the language through exposure. A student is going to be at school and guess what, at school, you learn. Also, if you're going to compare things, at least keep it apples to apples. I'm sure there are plenty of English requirements throughout all the years of your schooling .

QFT.

Op, did you get a D on a Spanish final?

It has been shown that learning foreign languages benefits in many ways, most of which are outside the realm of actually using the language.

There's nothing wrong with learning a foreign language. If you actually learn enough to be able to communicate in it, it will at least look good on your resume, might even get you a job over someone else.

Look at it this way: if there's some hispanics near you somewhere and they're talking bad about you, you can turn around and tell them that you understood them :p

You're a joke.

First of all, yes there is an English requirement to graduate HS.

Second of all, yes there are classes called ESL (English as a second language) which those students take. I'd venture to guess these students have a better grasp of the English language than you do.

Third, is it really going to kill you to expand your horizons? How f*cking arrogant are you to think that English is the only language worth learning out there? Do you realize how much of the world you're shutting out with that mindset? How many classic works of art you cannot begin to comprehend without other languages?

Fourth, you never know when you are going to need to know or understand another language out there. Case in point, without high school Spanish I wouldn't have been able to help out in a car accident situation I witnessed 5 years ago. Woman ran through a stop sign and drilled the hell out of a Mexican guy in his car right in front of me. Had I not been there to talk to him I wouldn't have been able to send for the ambulence he needed because of internal injuries he sustained as a result of the accident. Now would the cops have eventually shown up to survey the damage and at that point been able to help him? Maybe.. but I was able to send for help before the cops even showed and also ensure that they sent a Spanish speaking officer so this guy didn't get screwed over by the dumb b!tch who caused the accident.

Take your blinders off and grow up.

learning spanish in HS is good because it allowed me to test out of all my foreign language requirements in college, thus allowing me to take more electives :)

Same here, I got 12 credit hours (4 classes) worth of credit because of my 3 years of high school Spanish allowing me to take classes that ended up changing my entire career around.

Feel free to stay right where you are for the rest of your life - you'll never have to use another language, and the rest of the world sure won't miss you.

Outside of the obvious advantages to being able to speak, read and write Spanish, learning a second language will improve your English. When you're learning a language, you're forced to think about the things that you would do naturally when speaking English. By doing so, you realize why you speak the way that you do.

I did 3 years of it in HS, now it's as bad as my Russian. Not much use for it either even with a large hispanic population.

Spanish is easy, and seeing as how our Government doesn't seem to want to get rid of the Mexicans, you'll end up speaking it someday.

1. English isn't my native language, and I excel at using it.
2. There are 'requirements,' but there are so many wormholes. ESL at my school is a joke.
3. I'm not sure if there are any other languages offered besides Spanish; I haven't met anyone or seen any one deal with anything besides Spanish.
4. Yes, I *can* live in my area without knowing ANY Spanish.
5. This is a rant. Rants usually involve hatred taking over common alternatives and/or well-thought ideas. I'm starting to regret creating this thread, too.

I have no problem learning the grammar/vocab/pronunciation (I get A's in that part). But that stuff is only 40-50% of our grade. We have mediocre 'culture' things like presentations, projects, etc. Either these things are added to be filler for time, or the Spanish dept. actually believes this is equally weighted next to learning the language.

BTW, what is waambulance?

I wrote a rather scathing set of documents tearing to to shreds....but now that you have made list I'll just respond to that

Also, know that I am being nice, and know that my family is from Central American (all US citizens now), and that I was born here, and speak spanish, french and english, and can write all three...

EITHER YOU A THE DUMBEST FVKING HIGH SCHOOLER IN THE FVKING WORLD OR YOU HAVE NO SENSE OF WHAT IS BEYOND THE HORIZON. SPANISH IS NOT A FVKIGN BACKWATER LANGUAGE. SAYING SUCH THINGS IS MALICIOUS AND UNBECOMING OF ANYONE OF ANY STATURE, OR LACK THERE OF. I urge you to take it back.

1. not pertinent to your shameless assault on spanish language
2. who gives a fvk. a rank is supposed to bitch about the system. instead you insulted a whole fvking race of people.
3. Not sure? then STFU.
4. who gives a fvk. not pertinent to your shameless insult of the spanish language
5. rants, by nature, do not offer some sort of get out of jail free card or allow any derogatory of hate without facing an angry crowd. we can all bitch, but at least be reasonable. that's the point of a RANT. rationality being trounced by the irrational and your bitching about it.

that is not what you jsut did.

I'm sorry man, but most other countries teach their children multiple languages. Not only does it offer valid insight into other cultures, but it helps you reexamine your own.

The lack of rationality you are exhibiting is scary man.
