I am interested in teaching myself German. I graduated from college now, so I cant take classes so easily though. I am looking for recommendations on books. I would prefer one that teaches like some vocab that goes together along with some grammar lessons.

Where do you live?

If you live in an urban setting, there's a chance you're near a chapter of the Goethe Institut. If you are near one, they should be able to offer what you're looking for.

Also, check out the set of German links listed in the Links Section of My Web Site. Check out the links for grammar, German radio stations, and German newspapers.

Good luck!

(Been studying German since 1994.)

Learning Deutch is harder the older you get. I took 3 years of it in HS. It is an interesting language. I wish you luck.

Kenst du Ingo?
ja! Ingo ist mein freund!

Let's see if I can translate, with my extremely limited knowledge of Deutch. :)

"Know you Ingo?"
"Yes! Ingo is my friend"

Hey, that wasn't too hard. ;)

Hehe.. sorry, it was a bad joke on my part.

Are you suggesting that when talking about Germany/German people/German language, Hilter/WAR and the will to conquer comes to mind?

Yes but you can leave out the reference to Hitler, Germans and Germanic Tribes were nortorious for War like Societies in the past. Like I said it was a bad joke.

Learning German shoudn't be too hard. You don't have to worry much about pronunciation, so it is somewhat easier to learn at home than English, isn't it? Der, die, das only hurt in the beginning.

No way.

Nope, Germans conquered England, thats where most of the English came from.... minor french words now and then, but mostly based on German. And German isn't a romance language, cause the Germans werent conquered by the Romans the way the Frenchies were ;)

It was Germanic Tribes that Captured England as there was no Germany back then (Angles and Saxons for the most part )But afterwards the Normans (French)conquered England and French was the offical Language of the English Royal Court for awhile. Also keep in mind that the Franks who are the Ancestors of the Modern Day French were also a German Tribe.

There wasn't a "Germany" until like the 1800s i think. Confederation of Rhine?

Michel Thomas ("The Teacher to the Stars") is the best language teacher out there. It's the no BS approach to learning.

I have these cds. Beats any 1 year college course by leaps. Even language instructors have told me the tapes are exceptional and ABOVE all the other crap out there,

My wife is German, so I must know some German when speaking to the parents back in Germany.

As with any language, you either USE it or LOSE it. Practice the lessons. You can't go wrong with these CD's in terms of budget and learning at your own pace!
