Learning a new language (German)

Already speak English / Spanish, looking to pick up a 3rd language and had it narrowed down to Russian / German, before settling on German.

Anyone have success learning via CD's / workbooks? Any recommended methods to look in to?

Thx!

Edit: Just found a thread on a similar subject... saw Pimsleur and Rosetta Stone mentioned.

German is a nice language...I took 3 years and can speak it fairly well...beware that the grammer aspect is difficult...I hated that part the most...ugh...

It's a fun language...Good luck...

Im trying to learn german as well... The hardest thing is by far the vocab. The grammar is odd, but once you learn it things become pretty logical, well as logical as verbs at the end of a sentence can get. But learn vocab well, especially the gender, that was my biggest mistake.

Native english speaker here, and I know german grammar better than english grammar :-(

I learned 1st year German through courses.

I looked into that Rosetta Stone software and it actually looks pretty good. I might use it to keep up to date with my German.

Agree with the above...learn the gender (der, die, or das) with each noun...there is no trick, because they are almost random...

IMO, haven taken German and Spanish, there is no substitute for a language school, talking with native speakers, or studying at a University.

German techno and porn at the same time. It will force itself into your brain and you will speak the language fluently.

I see... any other recommendation on new language than those mentioned above?

Also curious about language software. I'm taking Spanish right now, but I'd like to learn basic Japanese within about a year (GF is Japanese and I'll be heading across the pacific in about a year if all goes well). I have audio CDs (Pimsleur), but I'd like to supplement them with something.

I dunno, at some point it I think you can make educated guesses that are right more often then not. I can't really say how or why, but if I know what a word means I can usually guess its gender pretty easily.

You're half way there already. German is very similar to English. Don't let the big words scare you, they are just compound words that you need to break down.

Schwarzwalderkirschetorte = black forest cherry cake
Schwarz = black
walder = forest
kirsche = cherry
torte = cake
