Highly recommend to NOT use a early version of livecd (in my case 2004.2), and using the latest version of portage and stage2.

I kept having problems with my gentoo install, mtab was all screwed up, kept getting problems installing packages. Not to mention the boot up process froze half the time.

Using live cd for 2005.0, for some odd reason, stage2 was not on there, but downloading it off the net was a non-issue and happyily installing gentoo without any current problems.

So, you're saying... Keep your install media in sync with what you're trying to install?

that is indeed what i am saying.

i underestimated how different the installation process was using newer livecds.

mirrorselect is much improved. and the emerge process is different.
