I'd like to get into piano, I have a Yamaha keyboard. Is there any software I can use to learn or any other methods you recommend? Should I get a midi cable and hook it up to my computer?

Keyboards just aren't the same as a regular piano. Because with a regular piano, since everything is mechanical, you gain strength in your fingers. With a keyboard, there isn't much resistence when you press the keys so I believe it takes longer to build your hands up physically.

but if you are more interested in theory, then that's another story.
 
But he could still learn to play on a keyboard, it would just be a little more difficult to play an actual piano. Some keyboards do also provide a mechanism very similar to a real piano, and allow for adjustable key sensitivity.
 
My gf has a $5,000 roland that's pressure sensitive and specially weighted to make it feel like a real piano.. Sounds exactly like one as well.. Good keyboards DO exist - don't overly generalize anything..
 
Yeah but I make the assumption that he's not going to spend thousands of dollars for a keyboard. I'd like to get my mitts on a KORG someday, but it ain't going to happen. Besides, I think you can find decent pianos for 500-1000 dollars, why not get the real deal??

There is nothing like learning the old fashioned traditional way. And believe you me, the best artists learned the old fashioned way.
 
theres a software called gigasampler and it has a 2 gb grand piano sample, and by spectrum analysis its supposed to be more accurate than a real grand.

Im interested in theory, and I dont want to buy anything else expensive. My keyboard has adjustable sensitivity and a certain amount of pressure is needed to press down the keys. I understand that its not perfect, but Id like to just be able to play a few pieces and understand music better.

My girlfriend is a talented singer, and I'd like to be able to keep up in music conversations.
