I want to learn to speak Icelandic.

How similar is Icelandic to Norwegian, Sweedish, Scandinavian, etc?

Nope. My fathers side of the family came from Iceland (well, the last one to be born in Iceland was my great grandmother). I would like to go to Iceland one day and visit any relatives I may still have there. I think it would be nice to learn the language. I tell people I am Icelandic. My name is Stefan Anthony Thor Stefansson. Learning the language would be the least I could do if I'm going to be telling people I'm Icelandic. I don't think more than 5 people in my extended family that live here can speak the language, and they are all going to be dead soon.

in Arnes, or not that far north? See, then you're getting into Icelandic territory.

Just south of camp arnes. I think it's the first road on the left side (driving south). It's in Spruce Sands (or Spruce Bay).

I'm also related to the Valhilmer Stefanson guy that has a statue near what used to be Sally's Arcade.

that's a nice area. My uncle has a cabin in Silver Harbour. I enjoyed growing up in Gimli (actually lived in Fraserwood though). Now, I'm married and in Winkler. Never thought i'd be saying that. :)

By the way, nice rig. :)

I don't have any personal experience, but my fiancee's sister-in-law's uncle (!) lived in Iceland for some time and he said it is entirely different from any other language and you can't rely on cognates to make things easy. OTOH, if you have a "knack" for languages, you'll still get it. He was raised bilingual (English and Spanish) and said that he was able to pick it up fairly easy while he was living there.
