leaking hot water at bath tub faucet

two nights ago our tub faucet developed a leak on the hot water side. last night it got worse. i put a 2 gallon bucket in the tub and it filled it up in about 1/2 hour or so. I'm gonna head over to the neighborhood ACE hardware afterwork to ask the folks there. in the mean time, i want to see if anybody here can offer some ideas. our house is old, built in the 20's. i don't know when the last time the tub piping was fix or replaced. my dad usually does this stuff, but he passed away last year and can no longer offer his wisdom in this stuff.

does the fix involve ripping apart the tiles to the inside the walls where the pipes run?

why would you put a bucket in the tub, just let the leak go down the drain.

Where exactly is the water coming out of?

You'll probably need to replace the spring and seat on that side. Pretty cheap, might as well do both sides. Depending on how old the plumbing is, you might just have to shut off the water, take off the handle, then remove the diverter. The spring and seat should be in a little hole behind the diverter.

the faucet...i use the bucket water to flush the toilet...so i don't waste THAT much water.

i googled and found this,

i hope my problem is fixed as easily as the article.

My guess is it should be, and that should be a good enough guideline for you.

Take a picture of the handles. May be able to tell what brand it is and what parts/tools you'll need

I'll do that tonight if i can't find a fix at Ace this evening. Thanks.

He may have a newer style faucet that requires a "cartridge" replacement, unscrew the old cartridge (after removing the handle) and screw in the new one.

washer/spring as others have said.

one annoying thing is if the faucets are old, the screws holding the washers in can sometimes be a b1tich to get out

i'm pretty sure its an old, old style. i once bought a new set from Home Depot thinking we'll replace the old ugly one only to be told by my dad that ours is too old to be replaced...
