my main pc has been offline for weeks with a problem i havent yet figured out. its an athlonxp on an epox 8rda+. power is fine, but i get nothing on startup (no display, no beeps) except for a C1 display error on the mobo led. c1 is supposed to be a memory error, however i've tried different dimms with no luck. i took the system apart completely and found the weird crap seen in the pics in the capacitor.

here it is

i'm no engineer...so what exactly happened here? is this probably why the system isnt booting?

thanks

What a coincidence! I just sent my 8RDA+ in on warranty today for the same problem!

Leaking caps = dead mobo.

holy sh!t!!!!!!

I have the same mobo and just checked mine to see if it was okay, well what do you know, all but one of mine are leaking too
My computer is working though, never had any problems with it, and I leave it on all the time. It's been the most stable computer I've ever owned. Wonder how long that's gonna last now.

Unfortunately that's a pretty common problem with the 8RDA(+) boards. About a month ago I was getting random blue screens and after checking a bunch of other stuff, I remembered the leaky capacitor thing and opened up my case. Sure enough that was the problem.

I've got an ePox 8KHA+ and I didn't know about this until I read it in GH. Mine are also busting, I used to have it on 24h/day but now I only use it when I need it.

heh they are probably caps made from a stolen/partial electrolyte formula in taiwan.

the dumbass the copied the formula diddnt know that a partial formula would release hydrogen gas when in use pop the top making them useless

those caps look like what would have happened to my motherboard (ECS K7VZA) if i hadn't replaced them with some long life nichicons - only costed me ~10 bucks total from digikey
they even look like the same brand that were in my mobo - LUXON brand caps

Here's the story from IEEE Spectrum

I replaced my 8RDA+ with a shuttle board recently from the same problem, leaky caps.

If no longer under warrantee, couldn't you replace them by soldering new ones on?

My 8rda+ did it two month ago. I thought I was the isolated case, but it seemed to be pretty common here.

If the board's out of warranty, I'd take a shot at replaceing those capacitors before buying anew one...
