Leaked recording at US/Canada border

Pretty stupid argument & question, but really he didn't have to be a jackass and escalate things. If a cop/officer asks you to do something - don't argue 99.9% of the time, just do it and move on with your life.

They see how many people a day and this guy is doing the whole "I know your work/how the law works/why are you asking me these questions/I'm not a terrorist..." routine.

Yeah, I'm an american, but what's the big freaking deal. I doubt the officer actually cared about what store he was going to...Just that he had a story. If he simply would have said, "I dunno, just gonna shop around" and left it at that I'm sure they would've just moved on/dropped the question. Instead he started to argue with the officer over why would he ever ask such a question in the first place.

It's just a feeler question, who gives a shit. I don't see how "what store are you going to" is any different than having your license and asking you "when's your bday." It's just a general question to get you talking. The more you have to hide/argue - the more suspicious/asshole you seem.

I fail to see what right I'd give up by answering a couple questions and letting a guy do his job.

We just acknowledge ours' authority of the moment and don't bitch at them when we're at their mercy. Do whatever the hell the officer says, then afterward you can file a complaint/sue/whatever.

I had a similar incident coming back to US through the niagra falls border corridor CN/USA

Same introduction, where you going, who is with you, etc.. questions that actually surprised me and caught me off guard, but easy questions.

Officer interrogated me in a similar tone/voice.

"Excuse me sir, but did you purchase over XXXX amount of goods in Canada and plan on bringing these back to the US?"

Me<"Yes I did, here is my receipt, and it's all here stacked up behind me from IKEA"

Officer<"I'm not sure if you heard me....I said xxxx amount of goods in Canada...."

Me<"Yes...it's right here on the receipt" (waiving receipt in officers face)

Officer "SIR! I'm only going to ask you one more time, DID YOU PURCHASE xxxxx OF GOODS IN CANADA!!"

I started to get a bit anxious and confused when my wife jammed me in my ribs HARD.


Me>"No sir, I did not"

Officer<"Welcome back to the USA sir!!"

You know, sometimes you have to just let things slide. All the guy had to do was keep his trap shut and do what the officer asked, and he probably would have been on his way soon enough. Was the officer being a little stupid? Maybe, but IMO it's not worth arguing with him.

The deal is your attitude. There are laws and rights for a reason. In the US it's generally illegal to search your car without consent/cause. I have nothing to hide but I really would not like it if a cop just started opening up my trunk and looking around for stuff. You also are supposed to be read your Miranda rights if you are arrested. If they don't, should we say "who cares, that guy is a criminal anyway." I have never given a cop any sort of attitude but it's this "what's the big deal" attitude that people like you have that allows the police and government to do whatever they feel like without consequence.

Do what? Submit to the cops? My point was we don't submit except in the moment. My snap-comment about the British was a little more general in intent, given my beef with Britain's gun laws among other things.

I have not crossed that border so I don't understand what is going on here. The officer asked you if you bought x dollars of goods in Canada and you told him yes but he wanted you to say no? Why does it matter? Is there some law I am unaware of?

Probably just an ass-ton of paperwork and other crap involved that the officer didn't feel like dealing with.

Now hold on for a second. There's a hugeee line between a feeler question and searching private property/miranda rights. I mean that's just one end of the spectrum to the other. Those rights I fully understand and uphold.

You can't tell me LAW IS LAW and that there's no bend. If everything (my rights) (cops rights) were so matter of fact then you'd be perfectly ok with getting a speeding ticket for 1mph over the limit, right?

This guy is a jackass. The guy is doing his job and he gives him a hard time? The interviewer is very calm and he keeps trying to provoke him.
 
lol, the guy is a douchebag and the first officer decided to mess with him. He was hostile at the very first question. The interviewer seems quite reasonable even when the guy kept escalating the conversation and raising his voice. Also, keep in mind we can't see the body language of the guy and his physical actions. The guy at the end said that the guy's wife grabbed an officer to get the officer off her husband. WTF is she doing that for in this type of situation? She also needed to do what the officer said and sit down and be quiet.
