Last week we brought you news of an AMD Catalyst for Windows Blue driver leak, courtesy of Asder00. Inside that driver set are some lovely codenames of unreleased products for us to contemplate:

AMD have a large line up of APU's coming, Kabini based products for mobility (notebook, convertible tablet, ultra portable) and Kaveri for desktop and notebook.

Also hidden in the .inf's are new Sea Islands GPU's, like Tonga, Vesuvius, and of course Hawaii

Interesting to see New Zealand codenames inside, despite the rename to Malta, for the HD 7990.

Nice, I can't wait for the deciphered list. I would venture a guess we'll see new cards this summer then as the rumors indicated, if they appear in the list already.

If true, AMD will have trolled everyone. Earlier in the year, they said that desktop HD7900 series would remain their fastest single GPU solution throughout 2013.

"AMD's product manager for desktop graphics products Devon Nekechuk, in an interview with Japanese publication 4Gamer.net, revealed that his firm won't be launching any new Radeon GPUs in 2013, and that the company would instead play out the year on its current Radeon HD 7000 series' performance, with price adjustments and possible performance increments through driver updates. In a slide released to 4Gamers.net, AMD pointed that its Radeon HD 7900 series (high-end), HD 7800 series (performance), and HD 7700 series (mainstream), will carry on the company's mantle "throughout 2013."

Things change in 4 months. Roadmaps get pushed ahead, products get pulled through faster. That info is outdated. At the time, I'm sure AMD thought Nvidia was waiting until Maxwell came out for a new line, instead of a rebranding. Now they need to respond quicker.

Didn't they say "until the end of the year" or something like that? Afaik, this was during a telephone conference.

AMD already knew that Titan was coming when they made the comment that they didn't plan to refresh HD7970GE in 2013. But if as of February 2013, AMD had no plans to refresh HD7970GE until at least end of Q4, and then it took NV until May 23 to launch GTX780, do you think AMD can all of a sudden design a 20-30% faster HD7970GE in just 3-4 months from May 2013? Therefore, the next trigger would have been GTX780 in May 2013.

I think these types of redesigns take a lot longer because it would have required AMD to do a new chip design + a manufacturing spin.

It's not about pulling a new magical chip out of your ass, it's about pushing the schedule forward, and it's happening. Hawaii is moving FAR faster than any of the old roadmaps, and that's mostly been happening over the last 2 months.

"Are You Ready"? :sneaky:

Nope, GPU mining is all but dead and next gen consoles and their respective games are not out yet.

Unless something dramatic happens, I'll probably wait for DX12. Assuming of course AMD is fixing their drivers, and given the total lack of any real improvements over the last 4-5 months I sure hope that is the case.

This is good news most likely a 28nm so I am thinking of rough performance levels below vs. the 7970GE depending if its a 28nm and or 20nm when ever the 20nm comes out. These look too high or low to anyone? :)

Hawaii VI 28nm 8970 vs. 7970GE (30-35% ?)
Hawaii VI 20nm vs. 7970GE (55-65%?).

I think a 28nm refresh could be pretty weak. It depends if they are increasing the size or not. If they just do some minor incremental improvements with a little higher clock it could be pretty minor.

I'd guess the 20nm will be a decent boost, 28nm will just be a boost.

If they release 28nm chips now I'd guess we're looking at Q2+ next year for 20nm. Maybe not, but I'd imagine they are not going to want to build up inventory for a 6 month shelf life.

I'm guessing that it could be a similar improvement as 7770 to 7790. (Assuming it's still on 28nm)

I'm surprised at how optimistic people are about 20nm being on schedule, and even before Intel has released anything sub-22nm...

Hawaii VI 20nm vs. 7970GE (55-65%?).

This doesn't make much sense. This implies your average increase by going down 1 full node from 28nm to 20nm over your hypothetical 8970 is only 15% (155% / 135%) on the low end and at most 27% (165% / 130%). It should be the opposite - the increase in performance by going down to 20nm should be far greater than the small refresh on 28nm with 8970.

I don't see how AMD can increase performance 30-35% on 28nm node. Such a card would beat a Titan. If Titan is a 561mm2 chip, how can AMD increase the performance on 28nm when their chip is only 365mm2 and they do not make 500mm2 die chips? I am thinking 10-17% is more realistic for their 28nm refresh.

RS I am not as knowledgeable as you guys here so just went kind off the top of my head and any research I could find on what I though possible performance increase might be roughly going to a VI Hawaii core. So thought I'd post it and ask guys like you your opinoins to what I thought that know the performance tech on video card notes. So you are thinking 10-17%, if that is the case that will give no temptation to buy the IV 28nm then :) if they are in fact releasing a 28nm VI Hawaii first and I will wait it out the 20nm VI for sure.

The problem he's having is that he loves Nvidia with a passion but claims to own 7950's....

Anyhow it's good to see AMD trying to rebound from the setbacks of being beaten by Titan and 780 GTX:cool:.

Nice call out.

My problem is the same as what everyone else with similar setups experiences. It's pretty well documented by now, I'm sure you're aware of it so I'm not sure why you felt the need to attack me.
