One of my favorite food in the world is grilled beef short ribs. I thinly sliced some boneless short ribs from Costco and marinated in galbi marinade for about 48 hours.

With some white rice, grilled beef short ribs, napa cabbage kimchi, seasoned spinach salad, and dab of ssamjang spicy paste. All wrapped in fresh perilla leaf from my garden. One of my favorite summer time meals.

Was absolutely delicious! Thanks for looking!

Looks good. What does perilla leaf taste like? Bold like kale, or mellow like lettuce?

Thanks! Perilla leaf is extremely powerful tasting herb from the mint family. Taste is dependent on the type of perilla leaf. There are two main types of perilla. One is Korean which is the type I grow and the other is Japanese variety called Shiso. The Korean and Japanese variety of perilla leaves taste completely different. Both are acquired taste since the flavor can be so strong and overpowering for a novice.

It's hard to describe the taste of the Korean perilla leaf since the taste is complex. It tastes sort of like mint with liquorice and hint of nuttiness. The Japanese perilla leaf tastes like strong perfume soap. At least to me. You can often find Japanese perilla leaf on sushi or sashimi plate as a garnish. Yesterday, I had a bowl of chirashi for dinner at a Japanese restaurant and it had Japanese perilla leaf under the sashimi slices. I ate the shiso leaf hoping to acquire the taste. I'm not there yet but I'm getting more comfortable with it every attempt.

The Korean sounds good. Japanese I'm not so sure about. I'll have to keep my eyes open, and see if it turns up anywhere.

I can probably send you some seeds of the Korean variety later this year once my plants start developing the seeds. But I warn you. The stuff is like weed and will overtake your garden and anywhere you plant it. It will grow every year without you doing anything since the seeds will drop from the plant and the wind will carry it far.

That would be great! I'm definitely interested in trying it :^)
