I've done this many times - taking half hour videos for my kids then writing the file to a CD.
Then I can play the video cd in my car on trips. Wallace & Gromit is a favorite in this format.
Works great, of course the better quality source you have the better quality your final file will be.
There are a lot of choices you can make to customize, and that's half the fun.

Asus A7N8X Deluxe
512 megs HyperX in dual channel
12 x 175 fsb
1700+ Tbred @ 2.1 Ghz
Abit Ti4200

I record @ 25fps 640 x 480.
dropped frames? not that I notice ;)
I'm just recording to MPEG-2 Optimal Quality Video and MPEG-1 audio.

I suppose I could do a lot better if I wanted to get technical, but I also have a life and don't really want to spend that much time with this thing ATM. ;)

I'm just using the software that came with the card.
I'm sure that if standard settings on the boxed software does this well then using better programs should yield even better results.
I like this card a lot more than my Hauppage WinTV PCI, which is ok for watching tv but terrible at capture.
