Leadtek 7900GTX TDH Question

Hello.

I'm looking to buy a Leadtek 7900GTX TDH card - and I noticed on Leadteks homepage that one sys. req. was that you should have a "A PCI Express supplementary power connector"

What is this? Is this just another way of saying that it should be hooked up to the power supply like other cards? At the moment I have a Asus 6800GT in PCI-express, and it is connected to my 450W power supply. Or does the card need a 2nd PCI slot for...?

I'm certainly no expert (as you can most likely see), and any help would be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance.

They are talking about the 6-pin power connector like the one on this card:

It is just another way of saying that the card needs to be hooked up to this plug. The 6800GT PCIe uses the same plug, so you should be fine.

How much are you looking at spending on the 7900GTX, btw...? Most of the 7900GTX's I see online are around $400, while the 8800GTS is going for $425-450 and it kills the 7900GTX.

Well, I'm in denmark, and can buy the 7900GTX for just under 500 USD - the 8800GTS starts at a little over 600 USD. These are the cheap internet-stores - I suspect it's the danish tax system killing 'em, though I'm hardly an expert.

Besides that, I don't know if I'm otherwise equipped to handle a 8800GTS - I've got a MSI K8N Sli Platinum and a 450W PS. I also figured that - since the 8800GTS has just come out - its pricing is out of proportion with what it can perform; the old bang-for-buck ratio. But maybe I'm wrong...

Are there any reliable, fast-delivering, international sites I should look into buying an 8800GTS from (if my comp. can handle it) ?

For only a little over $100 more, the GTS is a much better way to go then the 7900GTX & should use less power... as for your power supply, if its a high quality 450 watt model with strong +12v rails you should be fine, what brand is it?

G80 uses much more power than the 7900GTX. A 7900GTX, and basically all G71 cards consume less power by miles. e.g a 7900GT consumes 48W load while GTX 80W, compared to 150~ W of 8800 GTS and higher for the 8800GTX.

I'm not sure where you got this information from, but you might want to take a look here at the AT 8800 roundup:

It seems that the 8800GTX draws a maximum of approx 60 watts more then the 7900GTX & approx 30 watts more then the 1950XTX, & the GTS uses considerably less, topping out at approx 28 watts more while idle & moving to effectivly the same draw as the 7900 under load... bottom line is that if your system can handle a 7900GTX, you should be fine running an 8800GTS too & in most cases can also get away with an 8800GTX as well.

Yea, i made a slight mistake.

A GTX consumes around 145W while the GTS consumes around X1950XTX level. But even then, a 7900GTX consumes less power by alot. 40W difference.

It happens... I was off by quite a bit in my initial post too.

I'm actually running a 5000+ @ 2.8ghz in a 590 SLI mb, EVGA 8800GTX, X-Fi Fatality1 w/drive bay, 4x320gb SATA drives in RAID 0+1 & 2x optical drives off of an Antec Neo 550HE psu without any issues ... obviously if/when I upgrade to SLI I'll need more juice but so far things have been fine.
