Are you talking about the plastic shroud? If anything it could help temps a bit when the shroud starts to get the nasty dust buildup. The huge sink on the Leadtek GT, allows it to run around 8-10C less than other GTs at load. I don't think memory heat is significant.

If you check the egg reviews on people who've purchased the Leadtek version, some run at ultra speeds at a lower temperature.

newegg censors all hot temps....

and the cover on top is 95 percent of the time aluminum, definatley not plastic.

NM, talking about the A400 vs A400GT versions.

I've had some dust issues, even with the case fans filtered. It appears as if the tiny holes on the shroud could be holding back some air flow.

does that vantec fan card blow in the right direction? you dont want it sucking air since that'll be less effective

i have the leadtek 6800GT, and i think you'd do better to just take off the HSF, and apply some AS5, then reapply, this will drop your temps further. and also just clean the dust filter every now and then

yeah it blows in the right direction, its main purpose is to blow on video cards i think.

do you think it would help, worth the 20$.

any good links about heatsink replacement, i always just leave them alone.
im sure i can mange it but you know, itd be nice if i could read a little more despite the obvious nature of it.

when i apply the AS5, is the 6800gt processor covered like a P4 or AMD 64 or is it bare like a XP or P3, Ive also heard that it can be easy to crush the core when you tighten it down.

anything that I should know, warnings or the like?

I was bored one day and took mine off, reset the heatsink with as5 and rigged a low speed 92mm panaflo onto it. From what I remember, the idle temps went down about 10 degrees and the load temps even more. It didn't seem to add any noticable noise and let me overclock over 400/1100, although I just kept it at ultra speeds 24/7. Here is a pic. It was very easy to do and didn't cost anything, I had the paste and the fan laying around.

LOL!

u managed to turn one already vulgar ugly mutha heatsink into something even more ugly! lol

though i do like the beast of a heatsink this has, i do like abit of vulgarity and over the top beastly-ness in products some times

Just remove the heatsink, it's just screwed on. Clean off the memory and gpu with rubbing alcohol and apply the paste. I usually put a dab on and use a plastic bag over my finger to spread it evenly and reassemble everything.

Yea, it's definitely not pretty, but it does work. Before I did that I would get artifacts after an hour or two of gaming at ultra speeds.

I'll have to agree with the advise to slap on some AS5 compound. The Leadtek doesn't use adhesive.

I have problems gaming without oc'ing too. I think the problem is part wimpy fan and part subpar thermal compound. In my case specifically the memory was the problem not the core.

Newegg reviews are now crap since they have been vetting them very heavily.
