Wanted to start another thread about this as in my last one I still wasn't sure of what's going on. So here's the deal... Got a brand new Leadtek 6800 card, the rest of my system specs can be seen below. I've done a complete re-format and re-install of Win XP SP2. Installed all the needed drivers along with ForceWare 61.77 and launched 3DMark03. My score was around 8700 if I remember correctly.

That was yesterday, today I got around to installing Doom 3 with which I was having some major issues before the re-install in hopes that they are now gone. I also went ahead and installed ForceWare 65.73. Launched Doom 3, told it to auto-select best settings, the results were Medium Quality on 640x480. That was the same thing I got on my old system. I should also note that ever since the initial install I have not touched driver settings. I change it to High Quality and 1024x768 to see what it does. Also turn up AA to 2x.

The first scene with the ship flying away I once again get around 10 fps. That's a guess btw, don't have Fraps installed yet to be certain.

What do you guys think I should do? This definitely is not normal, and I don't think it's my comp... Should I try to RMA the card and hope that this one was damaged? Please tell me what you think. :(

System Specs:
Intel P4 3.0C
Corsair PC3200 2x512MB
Asus P4C800-E Deluxe Motherboard

I wonder if I should just try and sell it and get a GT for $100 more.

Hmm. I get 8504 with a 6800NU in my A64 3000 box. So you're on the money for performance.

Why don't you run the timedemo at a few settings and tell us what you get?

You're not OCing the video card are you?

the opening sequence completely slaughters my 6800NU, but not that bad. use the command 'set com_showfps "1" ' without single quotes. use CTRL + ALT + ~ or ` to activate console. anyway, i get around 25 frames at lowest when actually playing the game, and hit the 60 limit constantly when not in complicated scenes. Overclocking hurt performance for me in doom3 but increased performance in 3dmark....to be exact, core clock increased performance as it was set higher while memory was faster the lower it was clocked to stock. my suggestion would be, degfrag, close outside applications, and hope for the best. BTW, do u get a crash while exiting doom3? i have to manually exit using the three magic windows keys.

How do I run a timedemo? Never done it before. I'm not overclocking the card, played around with that on my old OS, but returned it to normal again. With all the people talking about how they run Doom 3 on 1280x1024 with 4x AA and 8x AF on High, that's what really got me thinking that there has to be something wrong with mine. Take Call of Duty for example... That game is nowhere near as intensinve as D3, but even that can't run on 1024x768 with 4x AA and 8x AF :(

To answer your question, no D3 doesn't crash on me. I guess I'll try to play it a little farther today, see how it goes.

a beautiful example of bad coding, not ur system. ur 3dmark is fine, so the card if fine. dont sweat it. oh and place agp aperature to 256, i sound like a broken record on these forums.

I would go ahead and say... dont run AA at high settings in the most 3d intensive game ever to come out to date and expect good results on the slowest released next-gen DX9/Shader card.

ctrl-alt-~ to bring down console, then type "Timedemo demo 1" without the quotation marks.

12X10 4X8X is WAAAY to high a setting for your rig. I have about the same rig and I get 36fps average in that demo on my 6800NU. (I only get 48 with my GT!) I'm using 12X10 2X8X.

I think I know your problem though, besides setting it way too high:
1. High quality mode is 8XAF by default, don't set it in nVidia
2. Set AA in Doom 3 as well
3. Make sure Vsynch is off in both your nVidia control and Doom3 Advanced
4. Make sure you're on Quality, not High Quality in NVidia control for texture quality

If all this is as I say, you should be able to run Doom 3 at either 53 fps 10X7 4X8X, or 50fps 12X10 2X8X. Good luck!

It's not bad coding. CoD just uses a ton of fillrate for explosions, foliage, and similar things. There's no way around it.

Did everything you said to, changed all the driver settings to app-controlled, then set High Quality on doom 3, 1024x768, 2x AA, and I always play with vsync on, so that I didn't change. But during the opening sequence I now got 30 fps... Is it all because I used to set all the same settings in the driver? I definately wasn't getting the same results before, I just can't figure out exactly what was so different... Went up to 60 as I was running across that bridge. I'll play around with this a little bit more, but it's a lookng a little better right now. :)

Make sure your motherboard drivers are all up to date. Make sure your sound card drivers are all up to date.

Try disabling your sound card in device manager to see if it is the culprit. This happens a lot with sound cards and just having windows XP's built in drivers running sound and mobo drivers is a big no-no. Just double check everything as you said you just reinstalled Windows. Sometimes people forget that there is more to their system than a cpu and video card. (Not saying you did this, but just make sure)

I'm glad it's working better for you. You should try the timedemo with vsynch off/on- it will steal 1/3+ of your fps.

One more thing- you should force the refresh rates in the nVidia control panel on the resolutions you play at-Doom3 defaults to 60Hz. :(

60Hz is perfect... I'm playing on an LCD, so 1280x1024 @ 60Hz is the best I can or need to do anyway. As for vsync, if I turn it off the images starts getting breaks in the middle. I don't care for fps above 60 anyway, only turn it off for 3DMark. Will try the time demo in the next few hours or whenever I take my next break :p So far it seems to be running ok even at 1280x1024, High Quality, 0x AA. That's stretching it a bit though. Right now I think 1024x768, High Quality, 2x AA works best. Still have no idea, why I couldn't come close to that before.
