NOW WITH ON BOARD VIDEO!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N92rXMP9ECg

If you watch, you can see the gray cloud of dust released at deployment! That's my brother's ashes.

Fly high bro! I love you!

This past weekend was LDRS (Large Dangerous Rocket Ships) 29. A High Powered Rocket meet at Lucerne Dry Lake in CA.

As you may know, my brother Erik Gates of Mythbusters and Gates Brother's Rocketry fame died in an accident last year.

So this year we launched his ashes in two HPR rockets over the lake bed.

Pics from my nephew's facebook page:

The Family with Porthos (Part of Erik's ashes are packed in the chute):

She flys!

And a successful recovery:

My Late brother's widow also launched some of Erik in the first rocket she made with him. This was VERY cool as it was a smaller, lower flying rocket and the grey cloud could be seen when the chute deployed. My nephew, the widow, and myself with her goblin:

Also, our large SUMO project:

LDRS 29 and the launch of two of our Gates Brother's Rockets will be on the Science Channel July 5th. Kari from the Mythbusters was there to offer her condolences and meet with the family for the launch. She will be the host on the Show.

Nice!

My bros and I were really into rocketry back in the 70's when I was a kid. I think we had about 5 or 6 Estes goblins. Your picture of the goblin launch brought back memories.

I said they're fixed, dammit!

& they are too, very cool indeed :)

Was the Falcon 9 launch launch of interest to you? Did you read that the tumbling stage they did get into orbit sparked all sorts of daft UFO theories down here? ;)

Yes! It's been very cool following the Falcon project. Though I must say we have motor envy. LOL!

Fsck em, I want to see Delta-4 Heavy back in action, let's show these freaks what a bloated, runaway military budget can do!

That looked really neat - I'll bet it was awesome to watch up close and live.

Very much so!

Also, both large rockets had video onboard. I'll post that as soon as I get it from my brother.

i don't remember if i offered you my condolences or not. if i saw a thread about your brother dying, i surely would have. either way, i'd like to offer my condolences in case i didn't previously.

that's very cool what you guys planned for his ashes. i'm sure wherever you believe him to be, he'd be proud his family did this for his ashes.

you shoulda put something else in her face

know what i'm sayin'? eh? :)

Actually, all that TV makeup was kinda gross in person.

She's a real cutie, don't get me wrong. But man, that heavy pancake is awful looking in person.

BTW, she's a bit shorter in real life than she looks on TV. Weird.

yeah, i had some friends in theater, tv, and performing arts... after they were done on stage, i'd go and see them and they looked totally different with all that make-up on. it's hard to see when the lights are on them, whether it was in front of the camera or on stage... but afterwards, it looked ridiculous.
