LCDs and 1280x1024

Hey everyone, I've been looking into building a new computer for a while now, and I really want to run at 1600x1200, but I noticed that my LCDs max resolution is 1280x1024, and a lot of other LCD's are like that as well, and I looked for some that supported 1600x1200 but they were in the $600+ price range. Is there a reason that most LCD's only support 1280x1024? Is there any way to run resolutions at 1600x1200 or past 1280x1024 if your video card supports it but your monitor doesnt?

Because lcd's under 20 inches physically only have 1280x1024 pixels and you can't control part of a pixel. If you tried running 16x12 on a 17 or even a 19 reading text would be teh suck.

There have been lots of sales on the 2001FP lately bringing it down near (and sometimes even below) $500, which is pretty good (and probably the cheapest you will find a 20" UXGA LCD).

Not really...either a 1600x1200 picture would be squeezed/resized into 1280x1024 (pointless, plus I don't even think any video cards/drivers do that) - or it would still be a 1280x1024 image, but panning across a 1600x1200 virtual desktop (some drivers do this...I don't see the point in it, although some may find it useful).

I don't know about that...there are tons of laptop LCD's that use 1600x1200 at 15" and similarly small screens. You could just increase the text resolution/dpi if that were a problem, usually.
