LCD won't come out of sleep mode?

Guys,

I just built a new system for a friend, consisting of the following:

EPoX EP-4PEA+ board, Pentium 4 2.4GHz, 256MB Crucial PC2700, Crucial/ATI Radeon 8500LE 128MB w/ DVI, Seagate Barracuda IV 40GB, Liteon DVD and CD-RW. Friend wanted Win98SE as he developed a dislike for XP, from a laptop received last Christmas.

Setup of machine and install of Win98SE went fine - not one hiccup. Today he informed me that the monitor - a Hitachi CML170SXW+ - would apparently go into sleep mode and not come back out, simply indicating no signal present. Is this typical of LCD's? Is there some setting that you're aware of that either should be or should not be set to avoid this? I find it perplexing as I worked w/ it for two days and never had an issue of it coming out of sleep mode.

Any suggestions you might have will be appreciated,

Jeff

Mabey the signal is out of range? As in too high of a refresh rate or resolotion?
Will the monitor work on other machines?

Kk4JC, as is typical when you set up a video system the refresh rate was set for Optimal. The options were Optimal, 60Hz, 70Hz, and 75Hz, all ranges applicable to the monitor. And, as is also typical w/ an LCD monitor it has a standard resolution that it defaults to, in the case of a 17" that's 1280x1024. I'll try it at Optimal again and see what happens.
