The price of those 15 inch LCD are real close, $17 difference,
KDS: 360 - 72 (20% off) - 30 rebate = 258
ViewSonic: 470 - 84 (20%off) -100 rebate = 275,

don't know which one to buy, any suggestions?

[Update], people ask where is the deal, this is from OD, 20% off is a coupon you can find at www.ableshoppers.com, rebate you need go to OD rebate center to search for...

I heard someone mention a 25ms time for the KDS which was pretty fast. That is supposed to make the KDS pretty good for gaming and stuff. However, I know Viewsonic isn't in Chapter 11.

I own a KDS Rad-7 (17") and some buddies of mine own the Rad-5 (15"). You will NOT be disapointed in the KDS!

I run a large (235 last attendance) lan party and know a lot of gamers. I can think of 6 right off the top of my head that have this monitor and love it. I go to about 2 or 3 parties per month and this thing is awsome to carry around vs a huge 19" crt!!

Just got done playing RTCW a minute ago. I also play the usual, q2, q3, dod, cs, yadda yadda. I even watch DivX movies on it and they look great.

I have not seen the particular model of Viewsonic your comparing the KDS too but I have a Viewsonic as my second monitor at work and it blows chow. I hate it. Going to go back to my 17" crt its so bad. But like I said I don't know if it is anything like the Viewsonic your looking at.

ask a dumb question: is there anyway you can display resolution more than 1024x768 on those 15' LCDs?
I tend to open several windows at the same time on my screen desktop, that can easily use all of 1024x768 spaces...

but those 17' LCD is so expensive, the closest one is Envision 7100 at outpost.com: $499

Well on my Rad-7 the native resolution of 1280 x1024 is also the highest that shows up under settings. If there is a way to make it go higher, I am not aware of it.

Plus keep in mind that lcd's typically look like crap if run at more then 1 step away from the native rez. Especially keep this in mind for gaming. Can your system and your vid card give you playable frames at those resolutions?

Now all the games look great on mine when I run them at 1024x768 which is one step down from 1280x1024 which is the native rez for the KDS Rad-7 17" lcd. If I drop them down to 800x600 they look like a$$ though. lol

For people looking for a deal on the 15", there are several posts in the last day that have KDS Rad 5 bla bla bla right in the title.

Also, there were posts about this about a month or two ago. Many people were discussing this same stuff then, it would be a good idea to go check those out before posting further questions.

Haven't seen the Viewsonic but I have a Rad-5 and LOVE it. As someone else mentioned already, be very aware that you have to run LCD's at EXACTLY the right rez and refresh rate. ANY variation on my Rad-5 and it looks like pure crap.

Wow - 9 replies and no flames... Allow me -

This is not appropriate for this forum!!

OK, now that we're done with that... I bought both the KDS Rad-5 and Viewsonic VG150 for two different clients. Had them both side-by-side, and I say that the KDS is better - the image was brighter and sharper, in my opinion. But I don't think you can go wrong with either one, although the KDS would be a no-rebate deal, which is much more attractive...

One nice feature on the Viewsonic is that you can remove the pedestal from it. They offer a wall mount kit for it but you can make your own easily. We got one for my dad from Office Depot by price matching to Dell's sale price a month ago, and got the $100 rebate. Since he has limited desk space my sister was able to wall mount it for him with no problem. This was the only one we could find that had a removeable pedestal, although I didn't actually see the KDS model, none of my local stores carried it.

Everyone has opinions and its just going to be your personal preference. I have a Viewsonic VG-150 15" LCD and was completely and thoroughly impressed with it. I would highly recommend that particular model.

The KDS RAD-5 also has the wall mount capability with something called a VESA compatibile mounting. Only the 5p and 5x don't have the capability.

Well, KDS just filed for Bankruptcy (or is real close), so I'd go with the viewsonic!

With a 15" LCD does that mean no gaming at 1600x1200? My rig is actually playable at that res, would be a shame to turn it down.

Are you serious with that question? First of all LCD's must/should run in native res and in the case of a 15" LCD that would be 1024. Also, if your system is so great that it can run games at such a high resolution, why would you want a 15 inch monitor? That res even on a 17" TFT (15 viewable) is too extreme to me.

Almost all 15" LCD run native at 1024x768, while the 17" or 17.4" run native at 1280x1024. There are a few models which support UXGA(1600x1200), but I believe they're expensive. Some laptops offer this resolution.. :Q

I'm happy I got a Planar 17.4" LCD a few months ago. :)

Couple updates to what is being said.

A) On my Rad 7 I can run games just fine at ONE step below native. I could swear my freind with a Rad 5 was doing the same but.. i could be wrong. I run almost all my games at 1024x768 which looks great dispite the 1280x1024 native. I do run my desktop at native though. O and I am still using a retail Radeon 64vivo.

B) I am looking right at a 15" Viewsonic ViewPanel model VG 151 as I write this. There is absolutly NO comparision between this and my Rad 7. The response time doesn't seem to be anywhere close to the KDS and I notice ghosting. Minor, but annoying. I stand by my recomendation to go with what I have seen and with what many have found to be a great gaming LCD, the KDS.

C) I have not heard that KDS was going belly up. I will look if I get time but anyone got a quick link to the story? I am not sure I would let that stop me from getting one. Depends on it is Chap 7 or 11 I suppose.

FYI: One of my friends actually took his KDS Rad 5 and mounted it (w/o all the bezel crap) right into the side of his Lian-Li PC-30 case. People were coming over taking pics of it all weekend at a huge 500+ person lan we were at (lanwar.com).
