I've been wondering, why is it that 17" CRT's can support 1600x1200 but even 19" LCD's are limited to 1280x1024? What's the difference?

Because LCDs operate best at their native resolution. You don't want to make your native resolution so high that it makes things too small for the user, giving them headaches and making them blind. If you ran your 17" CRT @ 1600x1200, you'd have headaches and be blind; everything would be tiny.

So it's not that they don't have the technology to make a 1600x1200 LCD, it's that they know better.
