LCD TV vs. LCD monitor

I just picked up a 26" widescreen LCD TV for $850. The picture quality seems great but the max resolution is 1280x768. LCD monitors (like the Dell 2405) would cost about the same or more and have a higher resolution. So what's the pros vs. cons of using a LCD TV for PC use? I use my computer for typical home use: internet, office apps, gaming, etc.

you bought a wide screen. if it was more of a square, the resolution would be 1024x768.

So what is the benefit of using a LCD monitor instead of a LCD TV? I know you can get higher resolutions from a LCD monitor but do I really need higher resolutions if all I do is internet, office apps, and gaming?

The widescreen 26" LCD TV I got cost about the same as a 24" widescreen dell. The dell of course is a monitor, the tv I got is a monitor/TV.

If you are trying to surf the web, and type, the low resolution may make thinkd look pixelated if you move close to it. If you sit farther away, you should be fine though.

The monitors have a lower dot pitch (higher resolution) than TVs (this goes for CRTs and LCDs apparently), so they cost just a little more.

ahh beet me to it .. it is the DOT Pitch simply because TV style LCD plasma's what ever have a certain distance in which to be viewed .. as the PC screen is meant to be viewed close up the dot pitch (distance between the pixels) are closer the picture seems more sharper .. where as on a normal TV the dots/pixels are further apart so seem sharp at a certain distnace

i think the range for the dot pitch on most CRT's are between .24 and .29 ... and TFT's are .25 and .29

less support for gaming in TV widescreen (16:9) than there is for PC widescreen (16:10).

LCD TV's are not sharp enough for me, for PC usage. Much too low of a res, looks horrible to me.

Big size, low resolution -> useless for everything that involves text. The other way around, using a proper LCD widescreen monitor for TV purposes, has no such drawbacks - other than that throwing the 360x480 standard TV signal at a 1920x1200 panel is very much pearls before swine.

Dell's widescreen panels are particularly handy for such things because they have an extra SVideo input, so you can hook up your VCR or satellite receiver directly. Of course, if it's near the PC anyway, going through the PC by the aid of a PCI TV card is the better path. You'll get digital recording onto the PC's HDD, and you'll get your graphics card to deinterlace, scale and filter the image.

What gives you that idea? They undergo the same quality control as LCD monitors.
Manufacturers have adopted a no-dead-pixel policy for LCD TVs.
