Looking for a small LCD TV for my parents. They want a 15" but from what I understand, the scaler quality is one of the main components that makes a good or bad LCD TV and that there are few if any TV's that small that have good scalers. True?
If not, what are some good models at that size?
If so, would the same go for 16"-17"?

What kind of panel technology do most smaller (<= 20") LCD TV's use? 6/8 bit, TN, etc?
If they're low end technology, would using a cheap $100 LCD monitor with a good tuner, like a Viewsonic NextVision N4 ($40 shipped on ebay), or N5, be a better and cheaper choice?

Edit: Up to 20" is OK.

Do they remember how small a 15" TV is??? sure a 15" monitor is okay but your only a few feet from it personally a TV that small is just annoying to me. I would really try getting them something larger than that.
But your right from what I have seen 15"ers do have pretty crappy pic quality. I'm not real sure if the 16 and 17" are any better but if they are really looking to go on the cheap go for it.

Well they have a 13" CRT now (going bad), and were going to replace it with another 13" CRT, but I've talked them up to a 15" LCD. It needs to fit on a night stand in the bedroom.

After showing them how a 19"-20" LCD takes up about the same width as their current 13" CRT (considering the cabinet is wide especially with the speaker and channel indicator area on the side), they said that'd be OK too as long as the LCD isn't widescreen (they wont be playing movies on it either). Also would be better if the speakers are on the bottom and not on the sides to keep the width down.
Though I'm guessing 19"+ is probably at this point still too expensive for them unless there's a hot deal.

Not much. LOL. It's hard to say since we don't know what to look for and which ones are good & which aren't.

BTW, this says:
Single Usage: There are many LCD screens on the market but very few have good video processing. If a LCD screen is made as a computer monitor, it is usually very poor as a video display. If you are planning to use the unit as a tv, do not buy a computer monitor with a tuner upgrade. Stick to a unit designed for video such as a Sharp Aquos. For dual purpose, buy a lcd tv with a computer input, not a computer screen with a tuner.
Is this old info?
BTW [OT], is that true today what they say (see page) about DLP bulbs?
