HI
Son in law wants to use a 32 inch Toshiba lcd as a monitor for a pc.
The pc is a 5 year old HP with just a analog video output. (vga)
I am waiting for him to send me the model number of the tv so I can look up the specs and see what inputs it has.
Can it be done and what would the video quality be like? Off hand I think the pc output resolution woulld have to be changed and not sure about picture quality.
This setuup will be used for grandkids to use the pc for internet access only. Right now the tv is connected to a wii and nothing else.
I think this will work,, but need some input before we do it.

For wii and web access it's fine. Really depends on the distance. The LG formula for optimal video viewing distance is TV diameter x 1.5 which in this case would be about 4 feet.

Yeah it will work. Nicely for games, text may be not as great as a regular LCD as the resolution on a 5 year old LCD is probably 1366x768.

he said the computer is 5 years old (prolly athlon64), not the TV. if it's got HDMI or component input, an HD4350 should do the trick. http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814102817 gets you RGB>component conversion, hdmi out, dvi >hdmi out, or dvi>dvi if the TV has it (some do). so long as the system has an athlon 64 single core CPU, it should be fast enough for web browsing

^I have that same HDTV but I use a 22" monitor for gaming and it sits right next to the 22". At times though I will use the TV for a game. No consoles though all PC gaming.

720p is unusable at that screen size, for me at least. 1080p would be fine.

HI
Still waiting for the son in law to give me the manual for the tv so I can see what inputs it has. I like the idea of installing a new video card on the pc. That will give a better picture and more options to use to match the pc to the tv.

I used my 32" 720p LCD as a monitor when my ViewSonic decided to stop working. It was nice even with a VGA cable, playing crysis with 32" and my stereo sound system was sweet though rather painful as I had my keyboard and mouse on the floor in-front of it :D

I think that 1.5X is only for 1080p and this is not the optimal is the minimum value of what the the optimal range can be (1.5x-3x?).

if the resolution is lower than 1080p then the viewing distance must grow, so if your TV is 1366x768 for example you should watch from a greater distance.

Also it depends of how many hours you are going to be watching.
I guess LG used a "standard" method for testing and defining the optimal range and maybe they based it at 2hour viewing (standard movie time)

Try put that 32" in your bedroom at about 4 feet distance and watch 3 movies (or play a game).
I bet that after 6 hours you will not feel all that well.

Just kidding, all the above are bs!
