LCD Tinted Red?

Hello All,

I've been running a Viewsonic VA-520 LCD off of a Powerspec ATI 7000 (Nope, not a typo, it's mostly for Microsoft Word and Age of Empires II). Yesterday, I was able to get a couple of hundred dollars knocked off of the price of a second VA520 at Office Depot. The only catch is, it was a display model.

When I got home, I hooked them both up in a dual-monitor setup, and life is (mostly) good. However, the new LCD has a bit of a red tint to it. I probably wouldn't even notice if it wasn't sitting right next to the other LCD. But, when they're both together, it's clear that white backgrounds (such as a new word document) are just a bit red. (The best way to descibe it is that the original monitor looks like a brand new white t-shirt; the new one looks a bit dingy in comparison.)

Other Pertinent Stuff:

The video card has both a VGA and DVI out. The LCD's are both analog; so I'm having to use a DVI->VGA Adapter. The condition seems to persist no matter which LCD is running from which imput.

Right now, the settings (Gamma, Brightness, etc.) are the same on both monitors, and the color settings in "Display Properties/Advanced" are the same as well.

When I got back home, I found out that my original model reports itself to the computer as a VA-520-3, while the new one is a VA-520-2. Both boxes say that they're just a "VA-520;" so I don't think this should make too much of a difference...

Ok--so now the question: What can I do to fix the darn thing? Do I just need to play with the color settings some more? And, more importantly--is this the result of the monitor being used as a display version? Should I be expecting big problems soon? (I was able to get a 2 year money-back refund from Office Depot on top of the ViewSonic Warranty... does anyone think I'm going to have to use it?)

Thanks for all of your help in advance.

Somehow missed this thread the first three times you bumped it...

I'd suggest that you try the monitor on a DVI connection, if possible. If it works like that, then most likely the VGA connector to the display is flaky. That's *usually* what's wrong when you get weird tint problems -- the wire carrying one of the color signals doesn't always transmit properly (or cuts out completely).

It's also possible that you just have some variance between the two displays, and you'll need to tweak the color/brightness settings a bit on the new one a bit.

Matthias,

Thanks very much for your reply. Unfortunately, the VA 520 doesn't have a DVI-input. (Seems strange to me; I guess they just wanted a way to segregate the low-end LCD market from the high-end?)

I've tried tweaking the displays some, and the colors seem to be fairly close now. Anyway, I'm glad to know that you don't think that it's a function of age on the LCD/Backlight. I'd hate to have to go through a warranty/return issue.

Thanks again!
