My parents just bought me an LCD screen for when I use my computer in college to save space. They said the salesman told them that LCD screens last for around 2 years. He said that the back light wil wear out in around 2 years. I have never heard of this from anything I found on LCD screens, is this true? I would like my LCD screen to last my atleast through college b/c they are quite costly. Any info is good. thx.

The MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) appears to be in the range of 50,000 hours. This number is based on tests that a manufacturer performs to simulate the life span of a device while taking the failures into consideration. Based on the MTBF, this works to out 5.7 years based on 24x7 use. When was the last time you believed a salesperson? I'm sure your LCD will be with you for your whole time in college. By the time you graduate, 18.1" screens should be pretty cheap, so replace it at that time.
