LCD Resolution?

I know if the native resolution of an LCD is 1024x768 it looks like crap to run it at 800x600. But if the native resolution is 800x600 does it look ok to run it at 1024x768 or is it distorted?
 
The native resolution is the highest the monitor can do; there just aren't any more pixels beyond that. So if the native is 800x600, it won't do 1024x768 at all.
 
I guess I used the wrong terminology. A company advertises an LCD that is 7 inches. It is 800x480 pixels, but they say it supports 1024x768. My question is how will this look? Or am I mistaken, will it even display 1024x768?

Like Zelmo said,

LCD's have a fixed number of pixels. You simply can't display anything higher because there are no more pixels to display with. If the 7-inch screen has a max of 800x480, thats as far as you can get. If they say it supports 1024x768 max, that actually means the native resolution is 1024x768. Native is the max for an LCD. You can always go lower, and the picture uses interpolation and it looks worse.
