What are the best 4:3 ratio LCD's available that do 1600x1200 natively? I would use it for action gaming. I'm not that interested in wide screen.

Also, cost doesn't matter.

I've had Viewsonic and Dell LCD's in that size and though I like the Dell better, both were fine. After seeing a friend's Samsung, I think it may be better still. For gaming, you might want to take a look at the new sub-7ms LCD's from Viewsonic and others. I'm not sure they are available in higher (16x12) resolutions yet though.

What is up with you Dell fanbois?

The dell fanbois fail to mention how *horrible* the black levels are on the 2001FP, Get a newer panel such as the Samsung 214T.

Since no one else mention it... DELL 2001FP. :p

JRW have you actually seen a 2001fp? Black might not be CRT black but surely not horrible by any means ...

Yes I had one sitting next to my CRT for a month, It had the worst black levels ive seen on ANY monitor, Sure it looked ok when browsing the web but when it was asked to display a lot of black (dark games such as Doom 3 / FEAR / HL2 / Splinter Cell) the black levels became very very poor, it was painfuly obvious with my previous 21" CRT sitting next to it. Newer panels such as the Samsung 214T will display black much better, The 2001FP has a 400:1 contrast ratio wich is one of the lowest ratios you'l see on an LCD. For example the Samsung 214T has 900:1 ratio.

(Note: Yes the digi cam photo makes the LCD look worse than what you saw in person but it still shows off the black level differances between the CRT/LCD pretty accurately)

Samsung 214T

The 214T sucks. (Edit) I was referring to the 213T, have not used the 214T

I have used it on numerous occasions, the response time is subpar, and the cost is relatively high... You get composite inputs as well on the 2005.

2001/2005 are better panels, especially for the money.

Well I've seen many LCDs with good contrast ratio and IMHO they don't differ much from my 2001FP. Now if I compare it to a CRT difference is visible, but not with a LCD if you ask me. And in D3 or FEAR black is really good too. Unless you have backlight issues which can cause an illusion of poor black I find nothing wrong with 2001FP, which comes at a great price too as always with Dell products.

Nothing was wrong with the backlight on my 2001fp, it had a very small bright spot in the upper left corner when looking at a blank screensaver.
