LCD questions

I'm shopping for a new 17" LCD- one with the best response time I can find (for gaming). I was orginally going to go with the Viewsonic VP171b but after reading a Toms Hardware guide I realized alot of LCD vendors use a panel from the same manufacturer- like the one most of them used for the article I read was from AU Optronics. This surprised me, and I wondered why should I pay hundred bucks or so more for something that uses the same exact panel as the others? I am not sure which panel the AP171b uses exactly (tey dont seem to like to tell you on the web site) but I am assuming it's the same one as others use, so I would rather just buy the least expensive one.

How do I find out which panel a vendor uses? For example, does the VP171b use the same AU Optronics panel?

What panels are currently out there with a 20 or lower ms response time? (I noticed LG and Samsung also make panels, but I don't know if they released news ones recently)

Any new panel with an even lower response time coming out anytime soon?

Anyone try this company Solarism? Looks like they have great prices and a great dead pixel policy...

AFAIK all 16ms monitors on the market uses the AUO panel. One exception to this is the LG1710B, which uses LG/Phillips own 16ms panel.

Samsung should be comming out with their new X line (16ms and true 16 mill. colors) in September, this range will be available in 15" and 17". The 15" should use an outsourced panel (AUO again?), while the 172X should use a new Samsung panel. But do take it with a grain of salt, the 192T is still no where to be seen. Anyway here is the link. They also got a pretty big VP171 thread over at H, and a funny one where a guy has a worm in his monitor (behind the screen)

I bought an NEC 1760V about a month ago and it's absolutely incredible. It's 17", 16ms response time, and there is absolutely no ghosting in games. If you still have any doubts, read this Toms Hardware review (go to the 1760V page).

They are all about the same. Hitachi and NEC seem to price about the same.

JZilla, dont hold your breath with that "X" line as Samsung continues to tell me it doesnt exist.

I am not holding my breath. But lozina asked, and I read the thread on HardForum yesterday. But it's interesting that Samsung says that it doesn't exits, when apparently a Samsung employee speaks about it in the copy&paste emails in the thread. Maybe they are just trying to be hush hush, but that wouldn't make sense either considering they have showed a 172X (if that is true) at Cebit 03. Who knows, maybe the the pics doesn't even show a 172X.

That Samsung 172X looks real nice. I googled it and found it on an official Samsung Deutcheland web site here so I guess it does exist. I wonder how much it will cost.... Someone in the thread JZilla linked to did a raw conversion from Yen to dollars but it's never like that, we will see tax/tariffs

As I said before, don't expect to be able to buy this in a shop in September. We don't even know for sure if and when Samsung will introduce a 152/172X (if it even exists). The 192T was also listed on Samsung pages (and some online shops) way before they introduced it, and I still can't find a shop that sells it. If it exists I am sure Kubicki willl be one of the first to review it, and as he said; Don't hold your breath.
