Another friend had 3 "Dead pixels" on his Gateway (old 19") CRT as well. Anybody know how this happens? personally, i have never had this problem on a CRT...

I've never seen this in a CRT monitor (I have seen discolorations, etc., but not 'dead' areas). The only thing I can think of is that the shadow mask/aperture grille was somehow damaged -- damage to the electron guns would affect the whole display, not just one section, and phospor wear is generally much more even than that. Were these displays shipped without being carefully packed, or dropped, or anything like that?

Um, the only reason they don't show tearing as badly is that the refresh rate is too slow to redraw it. This is not really a "Pro", IMO.
From what I've heard, it was cause it displays the frame at once unlike a CRT. But, in either case, I consider it a pro.

Why bring it up again ..?

If you monitor is blurry ... then it's got something wrong with it ...
Maybe I should've kept it there. Nice of you to look for faults in posters.
But, all monitors are blurry when the get to the outer edges because CRTs are like that, it's difficult to get it to look sharp. The really expensive ones look really good. But those are really expensive, and they only come in big sizes, I don't think so. I'm not gonna pay 1200 bucks for a CRT like Sony has on their website.

I've seen those marks you are talking about. But those are rare. LCDs are so frequent, you have to make an issue of it. Plus CRTs are returnable.

Personally, I wouldn't move to an LCD. Until they actually get cheaper than CRTs (presumably when they stop making CRTs for the mass market).

Black level & contrast ratio are inferior to a CRT (contrast ratio being vastly inferior, even on the best units). And there is no ghosting - although some have improved to the point of making them good for movies...gaming, on the other hand, I think they are still lacking. Maybe if you don't play games or watch dark movies on it, LCD would be better image quality.

If the prices were equal, I would still get a CRT. The fact that more available resolutions on the CRT, superior black level and contrast ratio, offsets the possibly less-than-perfect geometry on the CRT. Besides, if you are picky and return a CRT that has geometry problems, you should be able to get a good one.

I'll buy a bigger desk before I get an LCD to save space...never mind, my desk is already huge (2 person desk) :D My wife probably uses her PC more than I use mine. No WAF here (at least, not much of it).

They are smaller, and produce less heat. I can see why you Florida folks would want one. I like having our CRTs to heat the room up a bit, up here in Michigan :D And for those of you that get headaches/eyestrain from even higher refresh rate monitors, I feel for you. I can see why you get them!

The screen of an LCD is far too bright for me. Sometimes it seems as if I'm staring into one of those old overhead projectors that schools still use. Also, because most LCDs don't have a good viewing angle vertically, you deal with an uneven distribution of colors and brightness.

A *few* of the newer models have adjustments for brightness.

LCDs get you the ladies. In a dorm room, they just cruise around and go "ooh, LCD, purty ..." and then as soon as they see the blue-modded optical mouse and cute little SFF box, they just throw their clothing at you and demand you give them some sweet geek lovin'. Oh yeah.

Not too far from me, either. I'm sitting dandily over here in Titusville.
I think we will have to do a CFL AT meet some day

It's not cheap to build furniture with lego. I've tried it.
