I'm researching LCD business projectors. What is a lumen? What is the best amount of lumens to get. Also, the projector needs to be portable, so I'm looking for a fairly light one. Any suggestions for brands or models?

Lumens are a measure of brightness. LCD Projectors will generally be priced according to brightness. Basically you should figure out what your biggest venue will be and then buy accordingly. In my case, I run little multimedia shows at events where screens are usually no larger than 15', and there are typically < 250 people. For the most part I've found my 2000 lumens projector to be more than adequate.

As far as portability goes, LCDs are by design. The old school 3 head projectors were heavy as hell. LCDs are now pretty light (10lbs).

If you happen to be buying a projector for a church where the people decide to buy chandeliers because they look good even though they put out less light than the former lighting fixtures, you're probably going to want more than 2000 lumens from your projector, as well as a special kind of screen (<-- a a/v tech that speaks from painful personal experience).

jl,

Thanks for the heads up, but this projector will mainly be used for small conferences. I was just asking about lumens and the like because i've never shopped for a projector before

NEC LT157 or the 158 which has a DVI-I interface. We have the 157 and it is awesome. It's very small, light to carry, and bright.

Anyone have an opinion about the Epson PowerLite S1 that has a retail price of $999 ? I was thinking it might be an alternative to a $3000 HDTV, as Patrick on TheScreenSavers was suggesting.

yeah, you really dont get a lot of life out of these things. The most important number is bulb life, make sure you look it up before you drop 2 grand. (I would get a DLP projector anyway).
