LCD Planar v.s. Sony

I'm looking into a LCD monitor since I just bought a Radeon 8500 that has DVI. It seems more people talk about Planar LCDs instead of Sony. Are Sony LCDs nowhere near as good as there CRTs?

And which specific models are the ones that are highly recommended for LCDs under $1000. When I use the internet, even with my 19-inch Sony G-400 monitor I still prefer to use a 800x600 resolution. I don't care about fitting everything on screen; I want it big enough so I don't have to squint.

For gaming I primarily play Madden 2002 and an occasional racing game like Nascar 4 or Nascar Heat.

I have not been able to find Planar LCDs locally. I've only seem them through mail order on the net.

I've also noticed that most LCDs now have 1280x1024 as their native resolution. Does that present any problem if I use a 800x600 desktop? For gaming I use various resolutions but most 1024x768. I used to like a 1280x960 resolution in Madden but that resolution is not supported by the Radeon 8500, only nVidia cards.

I think replacing your G400 with an LCD would be a mistake at this point. I see no major advantages other than space/wt., and in fact, games may/will probably look a little better on your G400. Not to mention technology is still rapidly improving on LCDs and prices have nowhere to go but down. I'd stick with the G400 for a while, unless text is your absolute priority ...

Thanks Midnight. You know how it is...you here all these good things about LCDs and you start to think that maybe you should have one too. Sometimes you all you need is someone to tell you DON'T DO IT to steer you in the right direction.

I guess I can wait till next year before to explore this idea again 🙂

Maybe now I'll go buy a XBOX or GC instead.

You would need a screen with native 1600 by 1200. Then, 800 by 600 will look perfect. Otherwise, it would look like poop.

18.1 Planar looks fine at all the lower res.
Screens have come a long way from the "poop" that you got when not running in the native resolution

For Sony vs Planar

Sony: better looking belez/housing, Image? have only seen them on a Compusa monitor farm

Planar: Cheap from dell, great image, great warranty.

When I think about Sonys "great" warranty service it was a no brainer
