LCD panel types in TVs

I'm slowly working on narrowing down which TV is right for me and what I'm looking for in one, but one thing I've noticed while shopping for a TV is that it seems like the panel technology used in TVs isn't nearly the dealbreaker it is in monitors. (Well, I'm sure it is but it seems to garner much less attention/discussion). Now and then I'll see mention of certain high end sets using IPS panels, but little else and the specs that I've read rarely include it.

Is it simply 'implied' that quality TVs will be IPS based? Or are there really thousand dollar TNs out there?

Or, I guess, have I missed something altogether and are LCD TVs that fundamentally different than monitors? Appreciate any input.

To the first part I say... wah? I'd guess they're probably all IPS based. Viewing angle isn't a problem on most LCD sets.

To the second part, no. LCD TVs are fundamentally similar to monitors. They use the same technology but add a few extra features. TVs can be used as monitors. Many people do.

Aside from build quality and general specs, buying a TV is a really subjective experience IMO. The only way to get a good idea of what you want is to actually go out and look at the picture.

AFAIK, LCD TVs are either PVA or IPS. You can usually tell by the viewing angle (178° = IPS, <178° = PVA). The plusses for IPS are better viewing angle and lower response time, which is why I chose an IPS panel as my computer monitor. The main plus for PVA is typically better blacks than IPS.

I would think the higher input lag of a PVA would come into play for console gaming just like it does for PC gaming.
