CRT would have to be my choice for gaming. I can't speak from direct experience, however, as i've never actually played any games on an LCD, just read the mountains of reviews out there comparing the two. As for cost, however, CRT still wins out, unless desk real estate is hard to come by.

You can get an LCD cheaper if you tell them you have a small desk? I had no idea! :Q

CRT is better at any pricepoint (or even if you allow up to quadruple the price for the LCD) for ALL APPLICATIONS, not just gaming.

Sure, the 30" Apple 2560x1600 $3000 LCD beats a $200 CRT.... but do you ever see anyone making a "decision" between those?

For most applications you can get a sub-$200 CRT that is better than a $1000 LCD.

Word processing, general usage.... Most people are best suited with an LCD. Main reason is eye strain caused by CRTs, no matter what their refresh rate. Plus the space\power\heat saved.

yes, extremely good. Iiyama?

My old Sony 19" tops out at 1600x1200 @ 85Hz.
So a 17" doing the same is definately good.

Your average non-gamer absolutely loves LCD's. I think for most power users, though, they usually want 1600x1200 of real estate on their desktop, and at that point you're getting into a pretty expensive LCD. One big reason I'm sticking with my 22" Diamondtron is because a comparable LCD is ungodly expensive, and if I got one dead pixel on a $1000+ screen it would drive me totally nuts.

I game on my CRT because it's a 24" widescreen (Sony GDM-FW900), and my LCD is only 18" (1800FP). But if i had to choose between an 19" CRT or my 18" LCD, definitely LCD... or if i had to choose between my Sony to HP 16ms 23" widescreen... i don't know, i paid almost $3000 for my monitor, so i may be bias, i think i would rather game on my CRT, but if i could trade in my CRT for that LCD, i would jump on the LCD. There's so much more benefits aside from gaming.

What is the aspect ratio on one of those?

He can run games in 1920x1080.... Aspect ratio is 16:10 I believe. I've used one extensively, very very nice monitor, sad that they stopped making it. But it's a hulk, and given the choice, I'd take a Samsung 213t over it.

1920x1200 on most games... 1920x1440 on RTS (i have no idea why RTS uses this resolution rather than 1920x1200 like all other games, but all the RTS i've played, C&C Generals, Warcraft 3, Warhammer 40k, uses 1920x1440).

As for aspect ratio, 16:10.

Recommended resolution is 1920x1200 actually. But yeah, it's a hulk, and if i could trade it in for a 23" widescreen LCD, i would do it in a sec (even though i LOVE this thing).

Do most games support a 1920x1200 res? Does UT2k4 for example? I don't recall ever seeing it listed in the settings.

Yep UT2k4 does... and about 80% of all games these days do (games that i've tried recently Catwoman, The Suffering, Doom3 of course, Farcry, Unreal 2). When i first got it, it was a different story... 2 years ago less than half the games support these rez. The only recent games i've tried recently that doesn't that comes to mind is Deus Ex 2.

Yeah, I said 16:10 but then stated a 16:9 resolution... Me = crackhead.

Yes, most games support 1920x1200 or higher. Up to 2356xsomething I believe...

I still keep my 21" Trinitron CRT for my gaming machine. No worries about ghosting or visual degradation due to using non-native resolutions. However for all non-gaming uses, LCD is the way to go (dual LCD's even better like my two 1800FP's :p).
